I applied through an employee referral – interviewed at Staples.

    Interview Details

First step was an informal interview through a employee referral, then a phone interview with HR. Was asked to come back for another round of interviews with 3 different people. Met with someone in the same position as the one I was applying for, my would be manager and then a director.

    Software Engineer Interview

I applied online – interviewed at Staples.

    Interview Details

Applied for software engineer role for Staples Sparx through Indeed. In the posting it said they used Scala, Clojure, Ruby, Python, and Java. I knew Python and Java well enough and figured I could learn the others on the job, if necessary. They scheduled a phone interview with recruiter based in NC. <10 minutes, simple questions about experience with programming languages, job experience, and compensation.

Second interview with software engineer in San Mateo who worked for Sparx (the innovation lab for Staples). 30 minute phone interview. Questions were: Who are you, what do you want to do, describe some projects you've worked on and the technical challenges you've faced, what was your previous job like and what did you do, why Staples, why Sparx, explain dynamic vs static programming languages and why you use one over the other and which do you prefer (e.g. int/double/float/char/etc in C vs $ in PHP), what do I know about functional programming languages and what do I want to know about them, what do you know about Clojure, and lastly "any questions for me?"

Interview went fine and got an email with a coding challenge. Sparx uses Clojure very heavily and the engineer said so during the interview. I had 0 experience with their technology stack. We were both upfront about it but they still sent me a coding challenge, in Clojure, that was extensive enough to where I'd have to learn a lot of Clojure to get it done. I read a little and realized it was a waste of my time. They were going to hire someone who had job experience with Clojure/Scala/Ruby. I told them I wasn't going to do the challenge and that's where it ended. (It was a simple challenge about two lists of spreadsheet data and finding the differences between them while using a JSON API)

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeksinterviewed at Staples in November 2014.

My experience interviewing is very similar to the person from Dallas TX I applied online with Indeed. I was contacted a few weeks later by their corporate recruiter. The interview was good and she was professional and by the "book". She advised me she would refer me on with the reporting manager. I was contacted about one week later and we had a phone interview. I thought she wanted to have a face to face but she was interested in a webinar. It turned out to be a phone interview due to her schedule. I was prepared and ready. I have the experience. At the end of the call she told me she would refer me on for a 3rd interview. I then had a 3rd interview 2 days later. It also went well. 2 days later I get the standard thanks but no thanks interview. I don't know why employers waste our time. If they are merely looking to add a few more to the pool of candidates ( usually they have someone) What losers & lack of consideration for people!

    Interview Details

I was interviewed by a recruiter over the phone for 45 min. I then had a two hour face to face interview with the DM. I was told the next step would be an interview with a regional manager but instead I got a phone call from an HR manager. I guess that one didn't go so well because I never heard back from them even after leaving several messages.

I applied online. The process took 5 daysinterviewed at Staples.

    Interview Details

I applied online. After a few days I got a call back asking to come in for an interview, I set it up for the next day and I thought things went well. I talked to one of the managers, we got along really well, he asked me a few questions, like what I was doing at my last job and how that went. And that was about it, after that he asked what I would want for hours, asked me if I had any questions, and we chatted about how humid it had been recently. As I was walking out he thanked me many times. All in all it was a nice interview and things went well, but I never heard back. He said he had to talk to the other manager and would then call me within the next few days. Its been about 2 weeks, I've tried calling and got nothing, no answers. Fairly disappointed.

I applied online – interviewed at Staples.

    Interview Details

I applied online and was contacted a few days later by corporate recruiter. The interview went fine and she was very professional. I was contacted about one week later by the hiring manager setting up a phone interview. I was prepared and ready. I had the experience, acumen and drive I knew they were looking for and I felt confident this would go well. Guess what? it went terrible! From the start I got the impression the hiring manager was "checking" the box with his questions. I tried several times to get him to laugh or offer his vision for this position and the only answers I got were "cool" and "o.k". I also got the feeling I knew more about how to do this job than him. I believe he had made up his mind way before our call and it turned out to be 20 minutes of my life I will never get back. He told me at the end of our call that he was in no rush to fill this opening and he was taking his time to make sure the candidate fits with the current team. Those words was the nail in my coffin LOL! I sent the standard thank you email to him and after about a week with nothing not even a "buzz off" I reached out to the recruiter (who reached out to him I'm sure) for feedback and was sent the standard "your skills don't match what we want...blah blah blah".

    Interview Questions
    • Was not asked one difficult question. Was not asked to discuss sales strategy or how to go about reaching decision makers or how to turn customers into power sponsors. I got scripted questions with no feedback from the hiring manager. His mind was made up prior to the interview.   View Answer
