Sales Associate/Cashier Interview

Sales Associate/Cashier
Hermitage, TN

I applied online and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Staples in February 2014.

Interview Details – I was called about a week after I submitted the application and was asked to come in for an interview that day. I sat with the manager and team supervisor to discuss the expectations of the job. They then went through basic interview questions and offered the job.

Interview Question – The questions were typically all the same. They asked why I wanted to work there, which can be somewhat difficult to answer honestly unless you really love office supplies.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation

I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Staples in January 2014.

Interview Details – I filled out an online application and all I can gather from that is that you should pay special attention to the questionnaire. They want people who are attentive. I got a call a few days later and I went in for an interview with the associate manager. She only asked me, "Why do you want to work for Staples?" Answer honestly. If they see sincerety and see that you're being 100% with them, they like that. She took me on a tour of the place. My second interview was with the General Manager a week later. This was a little heavier on the questions. "What do your parents think of you? Bad things about you, good things about you? What do your friends say about you? What do you think is customer service?" Think before you answer, but be prompt and concise. Get straight to the point. Honestly, just don't fret too much about it. If you show that you're laid back with a promising work ethic, I think you'll be hired. Just be human and have a calm vibe. I got called back within two weeks (they told me 1 but they took 2, so don't fret if they don't call you back). They had me fill out some paperwork and then watch a couple of videos.

Interview Question – If your parents could say something good about you and something bad about you, what would each be and why?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – There was none. I'm still unaware of how much I'm going to be making. You can ask, but I'm not actually in this for money so I guess it depends on you. Plus, I'm relatively inexperienced, so I'm sure I start at the lowest wage possible.

I applied online and the process took 4 days - interviewed at Staples in November 2012.

Interview Details – I applied online late one Sunday night. I had a phone call the very next morning before 9am for an interview. I was made an offer that day, pending my background check. Background check came back clean by Thursday morning and I started that very day. Very fast and easy process.

Interview Question – What is an example you can give where a customer wanted a service that you could not provide?   View Answer

Negotiation Details – I was offered a position within the company that I did not apply for. I was told that this position would just get me in the door so that I could advance into the desired position. I was in said position within two months and made another advancement within another three months.

Cashier/Sales Associate Interview

I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at Staples.

Interview Details – I applied online and was called back by a manager to come in for an interview the following day. The process was fairly quick- I went into his office and he asked me a few questions and had me fill out some paperwork. He was very flirty and unprofessional (later on after I got the job he continued being this way-such a creeper). I initially applied for a position in the copy center and told that's what I'd have, but they put me on a cash register and I didn't do anything else other than stock once for the two months that I worked there. I was given a shirt uniform that day three times larger than my body and told to "make it work". The rest of the process was ridiculous, as I watched videos all day that they considered "training". Overall, it was a bad experience.

Interview Question – "Why do you want to work at Staples?"   View Answer

Negotiation Details – There was absolutely NO negotiation- the manager didn't even tell me what the pay was until well into the interview. Surprise, surprise, it was minimum wage.
