B2B Sales Consultant Interview

Anonymous Interview Candidate
Atlanta, GA

I applied online and the process took 3 days - interviewed at Staples in January 2014.

Interview Details – I could tell from the email that the recruiter was going to be tough. She asked me very specific questions that would only be applicable to someone who has been in sales for many years, even though Staples doesn't hide the fact that it hires many college graduates for this position. She barely asked me about my background, but when she did, she pretty much made it seem as if my work wasn't relevant. To be clear, I have been in sales and in the field for about three years.

Interview Question – Describe a time when the people you were working difficult people who made it hard to complete a sale? Describe a complex sale that required you to remember a lot of information.   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at Staples in November 2013.

Interview Details – I applied online and received a call 2 days later from a person who sounded like an "irish woman stuck in a Mumbai brothel". I called her back and responded to the email request for an interview. I heard nothing after 2 days, so I called again finally reaching the in house recruiter. A time was set for a lengthy phone interview, and then after passing that had an in person interview with a manager who would be mine if I was accepted. After having a nice interviewing experience with that manager, I went on to speak with a different manager in the La Mirada facility. WOW! What a difference: she was late to the interview (20 minutes with no apology), already had an agenda from the get-go about busting my chops, spent WAY TO MUCH TIME on her own self-flattery (I wanted to ask, "so when are you going to become head of Staples Inc?"), never asked ONE question about me or my background, only asked questions like, "so what do you know about the job? anything else? anything else?...so what do you know about Staples? anything else? anything else?...so what do you know about the industry? anything else? anything else?", and lastly spent all of 14 minutes interviewing me!
Within 30 minutes of the completion of that last interview, I received an email from Staples saying, "thanks, but no thanks."

Interview Question – so what do you know about the job? anything else? anything else?...so what do you know about Staples? anything else? anything else?...so what do you know about the industry? anything else? anything else?   Answer Question

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Staples.

Interview Details – One phone interview with recruiter, then a 1:1 with the district manager. Once you pass these two rounds you will have a 1:1 with the regional+district manager, then a ride along with a current rep. I was offered the position 1 hour after the ride along was completed. Overall, very quick and simple.

Interview Question – Multiple "tell me about a time when..." type questions.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – No negotiation

I applied online - interviewed at Staples in July 2009.

Interview Details – first interview was phone an HR telephone screening. This is to see if the salary is in range and you have the right qualifications

second, was an in-person interview with the hiring manager. Professional, yet nice interview. This is to see if you have what it takes.

A ride-along with a B2B is set up for you to go out and get a feel for what the job entails.

Third, was an interview with the hiring manager and the regional manager. They asked harder questions and I presented a Power Point about the company and how I'd be a good fit.

Interview Question – Power Point presentation was the most intimidating but went very well.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – no negotiations. I tried and they would not budge.
