I applied online. The process took 2 days - interviewed at Sun Life in June 2014.

    Interview Details

Submitted my resume online, I believe through LinkedIn. Was contacted by phone within a couple of days for an initial screening. Was scheduled for a phone interview later that week and the phone call was about 30 minutes. Very pleasant supervisor that asked typical behavioral questions. It is definitely important to discuss how your current experience relates to them. She said they would start making calls back within two weeks, but I never heard from her again even after sending a follow up note.

Overall decent experience. They definitely try to filter people out right away, making it very clear what their needs are.

I applied through college or university. The process took 1 week - interviewed at Sun Life in February 2014.

    Interview Details

I applied through my career center and received an interview on-campus. My interviewer read strictly off his sheet and recorded answers without ever adding any personal input (even when I mentioned his alma mater, which I later looked up online). I would hope this is not a typical practice in the company's interview process.

    Underwriting Assistant Interview

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Sun Life in June 2013.

    Interview Details

I applied through a recruiting base for an Underwriting Internship. I had to take an excel test to see if I had the skills needed for the job. Then I was contacted about setting up a time for an interview. Looks like a typical financial company inside. I interviewed with two head underwriters who were easy going. They asked broad questions about leadership, qualities, where I want to be in 5 years. It is easy to tell how the culture of the company is, they are laid back but results demanding.

I applied through college or university - interviewed at Sun Life.

    Interview Details

Interviewed through college campus recruiting. Was surprised at the questions just because none were too specific about strengths and weaknesses, everything was very broad based. Asked a lot about school activities and less about job experience.

    Rotational Leadership Development Program Interview

I applied through college or university. The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Sun Life in October 2011.

    Interview Details

I applied through my university's resume drop and attended two info sessions before the interview. The interview was completely behavioral and followed a set script. The two interviewers were young and didn't seem to have much experience conducting interviews. I got a very generic vibe from the employees I spoke with and felt like they use this program to mold people exactly into what they want their middle management to look like.

    Marketing Communications Interview

    Application Details

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 4 months - interviewed at Sun Life in May 2014.

    Interview Details

I had two interviews with Sun Life; I was scheduled for a 3rd but declined for a couple of reasons which I will explain. However the people you will meet if you happen to interview for a Marketing role are very professional and enthusiastic about the company. The 1st interview was with HR and they were very professional and asked you the standard HR related questions - no real surprises. The 2nd interview was with the hiring manager who again was professional and upbeat. No real interview surprises however be prepared to answer questions around industry experience - if you don't have any insurance experience be prepared to address this gap. I found the biggest challenge with their interview process is the amount of time it took to go from interview #2 to the final interview - because of the amount of time it took I had already moved on in both my interest in the company and had accepted an offer elsewhere so the company needs to be quicker in their process or risk losing good candidates.

    Interview Questions
    • Be prepared if you get to the final interview - they will ask you to do a marketing plan and present it; this is one of the main reasons I declined the final interview as I understand/get it that they want to see how you perform in the job and this is a way of simulating that but that's what I thought they had probationary periods for?   Answer Question
