There is a HR rep who makes the initial contact, I made the mistake of saying the salary mentioned was ok, after that there wasn't any negotiation. I assumed that would come after the interview. Don't make the same mistake.

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3+ monthsinterviewed at TIAA-CREF in June 2012.

    Interview Details

The interview process was started with a brief phone interview from an HR recruiter. Just went over the job description and requirements and asked a little bit about my background. I actually knew the HR recruiter that called me so they did not pry to deep. Once that was done I was scheduled for an interview with two managers at the actual location. The interview lasted about an hour and 20 minutes. The managers had questions from a packet that they normally ask, but because I had a lot of experience in this field, they asked about 3 questions from the packet.

They asked the difference between a Roth IRA and Traditional IRA
How to turn a service call into a sales call
    Describe how you multi-task

I was told by the interviewer that the interview normally includes a role playing scenario but I was not required to do it.

After the interview, there was a lenghty period to do background check and references .

I applied online. The process took 5 weeksinterviewed at TIAA-CREF in April 2011.

    Interview Details

Recruiter called and did phone interview/screening. This normally might have been 15-30 mins but in my case it was about an hour. It consisted of basic questions about my background and qualifications, informing me about the potential pay, shifts, job description, etc. Then HR staff called to set up in-person interview.

I interviewed with two managers who went through several behavioral-style questions (similar to those posted May 12 by someone in Charlotte). They also did a role-play where I had to spontaneously sell them an IRA. Overall, everyone in the process was friendly and professional. The interview questions were straightforward and, if you know what you're talking about (i.e. have experience in the industry) then they were pretty easy to talk through.

The only complaint I'd have is that in my case I had a background item that I'd disclosed upfront with each of the people I interviewed with. They said they'd checked to see if it was an issue and it didn't seem to be. After the in-person interview I got feedback that I'd done well. Then a week or two later was told that their compliance department had nixed me due to the disclosure item. It would have saved all of us a lot of time to have that run up through compliance beforehand.

The process took 4+ weeksinterviewed at TIAA-CREF in January 2011.

    Interview Details

    - Applied for the position online
    - Phone interview with recruiter about a week later, just detailing the position and comp structure
    - Personality/IQ/skills test online. Skills test was specifically aimed at working in a call center.
    - Panel interview with two managers together, wanted to make sure I could work in a financial environment, a call center environment, a service environment, and a sales environment. We did a mock call with them calling me from another room.
    - Got a call a few days later saying they wanted to offer me the position, and to go forward with a drug test and background check. Also did a background check on my FINRA licensing since I was already a licensed broker.
    - Got a call about a week and a half later saying I passed the background tests.
    - Filled out paperwork to move my investment licenses from my previous employer to TIAA.
    - Started training a few months later.

    Interview Questions
    • The mock call. The interviewing managers called me from another room and pretended to be a client calling in asking about investments. They gave me a sheet with the client and company info on it to use during the call.   View Answer
    Negotiation Details
I didn't try to negotiate since I was really wanting the job. I've heard of them allowing a little wiggle room, maybe a couple thousand.
