Sales Associate/Cashier Interview

I applied online and the process took 5 days - interviewed at The Gap in August 2010.

Interview Details – applied online and got called in for an interview the same week. the interview itself took no more than 20 minutes and that included the manager offering me the job. i had to ask the rate they were going to pay me because she forgot to mention it but i felt i sounded so forwarding and up front but it didn't hurt because i found out she matched my rate from my previous employer although i later found out that the starting rate was supposed to be much lower. the interview questions included what i knew about the gap as a brand and why i chose to apply there. i got told to come back the next day i believe but right when i was at the parking lot, i got a call from the same manager apologizing and that she needed to postpone doing the paper works because she got confused with her own schedule. hiring process was quick and was finished within a matter of days.

Interview Question – i don't remember a difficult or unexpected question, just the usual retail job interview, one asking about customers and maybe one other question with a situation given to me and what i would do or what i've done if that's happened to me before.   View Answer

Negotiation Details – i was hired after the interview and after the manager talked about the gap company and their vision, it was during the decline of gap a couple of years ago and they were going through a revising of where they're trying to go with the gap brand. they matched my rate from my previous employer and i accepted after having to ask what my rate was after being offered the job since the manager forgot to mention it.

I applied online and the process took 1+ week - interviewed at The Gap.

Interview Details – I applied online, then called, and eventually went into the store to confirm that they had received my application. A couple days later they called me for an interview. It was held in their back room and there was one other former Gap employee there from another store also applying for the position. We were asked really straight forward questions about customer service, how you handle stressful situations at work, etc. We then watched a handful of videos on the company and its product. It was pretty obvious that we both got the job before the interview was even half over.

Interview Question – How do you handle difficult customers? Give an example of a time when this happened to you.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – They simply told me my starting pay, $.25 above minimum which was kind of frustrating. After three months you start being eligible for raises though so it could've been worse.

I applied online and the process took 3 weeks - interviewed at The Gap in August 2012.

Interview Details – I received a call for my first interview and the manager that called me was super nice which made me not nervous. Then My 1st interview was a group interview. I got a call that night for a 2nd interview was with the GM and He was just as nice. I got a call a week later for the position due to a storm.

Interview Question – Since I am a veteran I got asked about why I wanted to work in retail and why I attend school for fashion but I felt like I tied the 2 together just fine for both interviews. I did feel nervous in the 1st interview when I was asked about speaking another language but after the manager said he didn't either I felt better.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – They call and offer you a position for a certain hourly rate and you have the choice to take it or not.

I applied online and the process took 3 days - interviewed at The Gap in February 2012.

Interview Details – The manager who interviewed me was really nice about it, and didn't ask too many questions. She was short, sweet, and to the point. She asked the questions and was upfront about whether or not I got the job. She told me straight up that I would get the job right when the background check came back. Which is really nice, I hate suspense.

Interview Question – I was asked to give an example of a time I had to deal with a difficult customer, and I never really had.   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – They offered me $8.00 an hour and I accepted, because that was 75 cents more than my last job.

I applied online - interviewed at The Gap in March 2012.

Interview Details – Before you submit your application you have to take an assessment and if your answers match up to theirs then that is how they determine if they want you to come in to interview with them. First you have a group interview with about 4 or 5 people and two managers. Before the interview is over they make you go out on the sales floor and pick an outfit out and describe why you picked it and for whom you chose it for. If you get past that interview, you go back in for another interview, which is a one on one interview with the General Manager of the store and that is the interview process!

Interview Question – Just know your fashion and the background of the Gap and you will be fine!   Answer Question

I applied online and the process took a day - interviewed at The Gap in July 2011.

Interview Details – Applied online and a few days later got a call to come in for an interview and ask for the manger. I showed up and found out I was interviewing with 2 other people. She basically asked us each our experience, availability and then she read us questions about what we would do in a situation and questions about giving an example of how we handled a certain situation in the past and whoever answered first got to answer and then we moved on to the next question. We were asked why we wanted to work at the GAP and if we were familiar with the product. Then the manager said she would make a decision by the end of the week. This interview however was not with the Head store manager but one of the assistant managers.

I recommend thinking of your question answers quickly and trying to answer as many questions as you can. Dressing GAP like is important. any of our dressier tops with GAP jeans or dress pants or layer tanks/tees with a cardigan or blazer with gap jeans or a cropped pant. The dress code does not allow tennis shoes or flip flops. So wedges with a strap back or flats are best. and smile, be polite, the usual interview attitude.

Interview Questions

  • Tell me how you handled a confrontation with another co-worker?   Answer Question
  • What would you do if you saw a customer acting suspiciously with an item, as if they might be looking to shoplift it?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – After I got the call that they wanted me to work for them I came in and sat with 2 other people (different from the 2 i Interviewed with) and we watched our training videos, filled out paperwork, and did our "scavenger hunt" which was just figuring out "hot spots" and knowing the DM's name. (None of which I really use). We didn't discuss pay, we we are just told what we were making, which was 50 cents over minimum wage. Not bad for the three us us being 16-20. Went over dress code, lockers, clocking in/out.
