Lifestyle Group Fellow Interview

Lifestyle Group Fellow

I applied through a recruiter and the process took 6+ weeks - interviewed at Time in April 2014.

Interview Details – I applied for another job within the Time Inc. system and received an email from a recruiter a few weeks before the fellowship application deadline asking to talk about the fellowship and encouraging me to apply. I had a phone interview a few days later, mostly focused on asking about my background. She told me to fill out the application online and that I would hear something most likely within the next few weeks after that. I applied a week before the March 15 deadline, and I didn't hear anything else until I received an email from the specific department at the magazine to schedule an interview over a month later. My second interview was pretty basic and asked about my favorite classes in my major, my previous internships, etc. I received an offer the next afternoon.

Interview Question – What was your favorite experience in college?   Answer Question

Finance Manager Interview

Finance Manager
New York, NY

I applied online and the process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Time in January 2010.

Interview Details – HR was helpful, met with 3 people, took a long time but it got done. Typical in a big company. But that may have changed over the years. Not sure who would be crazy enough to interview here now. Politics are very important here and it is very discouraging. Should be easy to get an interview here now because I don't think anyone is applying anymore. Layoffs are constant, not sure why the layoff people just to hire others back.

Interview Question – Is it important to be nice?   Answer Question

Negotiation Details – I was able to negotiate a little, but not much

Ad Sales Assistant Interview

Ad Sales Assistant
San Francisco, CA

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at Time in October 2013.

Interview Details – Initial application process tedious--resume sent to an online database in HOPES yours is seen. Follow up and scheduling very professional, met with the two managers as well as the current assistant to get a good idea of the day to day activity

Interview Question – Most difficult part of the interview was getting a full grasp of the expectations. They sold the position as an Advertising Sales position, however I was quick to learn that you are an Assistant doing administrative work and little-no involvement in the Advertising side of the magazine.   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Low compensation, wasn't looking for an Administration job

Senior Front End Developer Interview

Senior Front End Developer

Interviewed at Time

Interview Details – I exchanged questions with the team lead. I didn't hesitate to press the tough issues on innovation / lack thereof at Time, but was careful not to be too critical or patronizing.

The picture he painted of being a developer at Time was worse than I thought; dinosaur, hackjob, fragmented, inconsistent, house of cards held-together-by-bandaids kind of code base with a back end Frankenstein mix of Wordpress and Vingette 6, which I couldn't even find a release date for but was AT LEAST 10 years old.

I knew I was 100 % done with considering this place about halfway through, and then he asked me more questions along the lines of "Can you deal with / work around such a big, messy system, are you comfortable doing hack job workarounds because you have no other option."

I ran quickly in the other direction.

Interview Question – Can you deal with / work around such a big, messy system; are you comfortable doing hack job workarounds because you have no other option?   Answer Question

Reason for Declining – Archaic technology stack.

Editorial Fellowship Interview

Editorial Fellowship

The process took 4+ weeks - interviewed at Time.

Interview Details – The interview process was much different from those I've encountered before. You don't talk to an actual person; rather, you use a virtual screening program called Take the Interview, which records your responses and forwards them to the Hiring Manager. It took about a month to get through everything from start to finish, but they were prompt about getting in touch with you.

Interview Question – Most of the questions were pretty standard, e.g. "Why are you the best candidate?" etc.   Answer Question

Associate Marketing Manager Interview

Associate Marketing Manager
New York, NY

I applied online and the process took 2+ weeks - interviewed at Time in December 2011.

Interview Details – I interviewed at this company a few times and for a few positions, and had both positive and negative experiences. In 2008, my HR contact sped things through and did a great job of keeping me updated. More recently as people have been fired and hired, the new HR contacts I've dealt with have been horrible with follow up and acted suspiciously.

Interview Question – None - they ask typical interview questions   Answer Question
