I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 months - interviewed at US Army in October 2011.

    Interview Details

Speaking to the recruiter was very easy and straight forward when I came into the office prepared and serious about joining. My recruiter told me that he can tell when people just come in because their parents make them and when someone is serious about joining. If you're serious about joining, be honest and prepared. During the secuirty process for a clearance, some people say to lie so it looks better. I personally did not, as recent security violations are making the federal government crack down on lies during the process.

    Interview Questions
    • Have you done drugs? - Most recruiters want this answered with a no, so the paperwork is easier. It is possible to get a security clearance when you answer yes. You have to be honest and straightforward with the recuiter and during the security interview.   Answer Question

The only real negotiation you have with the Army is your job. Speak to the career manager at the recruiting processing station and see what is available. At the time of my enlistment, I had many options, from length of contract to what benefits I had, even when I left. Pay attention and ask questions.

I applied in-person. The process took 3 days - interviewed at US Army in December 2011.

    Interview Details

I applied at a local recruiting station. Because employment in the military touched upon national security concerns, the process was very strict; I had to provide my birth certificate and submit to a background check even though I was seeking a civilian position.

The recruiter asked me the "classic" questions, such as why I was interested in the U.S. Army and where I would see myself in the next five years. They were a little challenging because the Army was very different than the other places that I had applied to.

The interview ended early when the recruiter told me the Army would not be moving forward with my application due to my autism. I understand this was for national security reasons as well as my own protection, but it was still a little saddening to have to miss out on such a great opportunity because of something that was outside my control. Other than that, the recruiter was really nice about it.

The hiring process for this position was based off of my previous performance evaluation history in my prior jobs during my miliary career. The Branch Manager for my career track scrubbed and screened my record against the requirements for the job position. Based passing the intial process my packet was submitted to the hiring authority for approval. An overseas deployment prevented me from interviewing for the position.
