    Sales Consultant Interview

I interviewed online. The process took 1+ week - interviewed at Unishippers in July 2013.

    Interview Details

Interview process was very unprofessional and the owner was very condescending. The owner was very focused on how quickly you can type vs sales skills. In today's day and age majority of people have the ability to type quickly. The individual's resume should speak for itself. If you have had success and your work history establish's that, it's absolutely insulting to ramble on about the importance of typing fast.

I interviewed in-person - interviewed at Unishippers in May 2011.

    Interview Details

I was referred by a former employee for the Office Manager position. I called to set up an interview. There was communication between the Owners and the sales person referring me. I came into the initial interview unsure of what to expect with the first owner. I was emailed a 2nd interview time, and met with the 2nd owner. A third email was sent for the final interview with both owners. I signed the hiring paperwork and started 2 weeks later in June 2011

Send resume to branch manager/owner, contact via telephone to set-up interview time and date. First interview was with the owner, the second interview was with the owner again and then his head of logistics and the sales manager all separately. Then there was an offer placed for a salary base and commission structure, along with a non-compete agreement. Management is looking for an aggressive, go-getter type so be certain to emphasize this during your interview. They like "hunters" and former high school and/or college athletes abound in this company overall. A competitive type of person is what they are seeking out for their sales staff additions to the team, so be sure to highlight past achievements in sales (or sports or other competitive type of environment you might have excelled within if not having sales experience). You want to highlight that you are not an account manager but more of a new business developer and willing to bring new business on board on a consistent and ongoing basis.

    Interview Questions
    • Probably most important, hence the most difficult, would be describing a situation in which you had to perform to a certain level/achieve a certain quota in sales and whether you reached that goal, why or why not (I would go with WHY rather than why not in this scenario, by the way)?   View Answer
    Negotiation Details
This is an entry level sales position for the most part, so pretty competitive pay as far as they go in my experience. If you have a book of business you are bringing on board with you, I would definitely negotiate a larger percentage in commission (rather than the standard 10% they offer new sales employees) and/or higher base salary - although higher percentage in commission will look better (means you are confident in your ability to bring in business and are willing to get paid for performance rather than receive a fat salary and smaller commission pay out. A written offer will be sent to you with the standard $32,500 salary plus 10% of profit in commission monthly for your accounts you bring business in from.

    Sales Representative Interview

    Application Details

I interviewed through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks - interviewed at Unishippers in March 2010.

    Interview Details

A recruiter contacted me first. I was then interviewed by one of the owners of the franchise company, it took about 15 minutes. I was then interviewed by the regional manager, there's really only one franchise up and running in the region. This interview took about 1 hour...the final interview was with the actual company, Unishippers, VP of sales via phone. This interview took about 30 minutes

The most in depth interview was with the regional manager. He played hardball, tried to down play the position. He talked himself up a lot and down played the impact his employees had on the company. If you really want to get in well with him, talk about being a team player, and wanting to learn from the best.

    Interview Questions
    Negotiation Details
Not really much of a negotiation...the recruiter came in with an offer, I said I needed a little more, they gave me a little more. Most consultants will not have a higher base than 35k...plus 10-15% comissions

The company is looking for young people out of college they can mold into what they want them to be. Unishippers has many locations and each of them is individually owned through franchising, so each office has a different way of interviewing. The process is very detailed as is the training.
