I have been working at Ann Taylor part-time (less than an year)

I was hired even though I had no retail experience, probably because they were so short-staffed. There is definitely a sense of camaraderie among all the associates and my managers are pretty laid-back. The work is easy; the hardest part was training on register, which you get the hang of through pure repetition. It definitely improves your people skills since you interact with easily 100+ people on weekends and holidays. Associates get 50% off full-price merchandise and 20% off clearance items. Asking for time off hasn't been a problem and they always try to work around your availability. There are busy days and slow days, which provides for a nice change of pace.

Working longer shifts can be exhausting, especially on holidays since customers can be really demanding and difficult to deal with. People are sometimes just plain rude and inconsiderate (dumping their unwanted items on displays near the cash wrap; leaving all their stuff in the fitting room so you have to clean it out, which really slows you down on busy days; trying to haggle with you over the sale prices [this isn't a street market; whatever shows up on the computer is the price, end story]). It usually takes a little over an hour to clean up people's messes at closing, sometimes 2+ on holidays. No benefits since I'm part-time. Work can get tedious.
