    I worked at East West Bancorp full-time (more than an year)


    If you are mainland Chinese, used to working long hours for marginal pay, enjoy little to no recognition, and/or may be working on a visa, then this is the perfect place to work!


    - Executive Management that doesn't know how to manage, nor understand Western business practices
    - A very Chinese management style - few at top who are in the "club" and the rest are only there to serve them.
    - Seasoned professionals brought in, struggle to be heard and are heavily challenged and overruled by managers who don't know what they are talking about - i.e. - coaching a game they don't understand.
    - Irrational goal setting - exaggerated growth expectations that create demoralizing culture and punishment
    - Extremely political environment with back stabbing, circumnavigating rank protocol, unprofessional and disrespectful communication style that highlights immature management practices and undermines position authority. In other words, upper management encourages jumping of rank with issues and entertains discussions, makes judgments and usurps a managers power, rendering him/her ineffective as their authority/credibility has been taken away.
    - HR is in the style of "Big Brother" and appears to be there for Executive management more than anyone else. There is a certain tone to the hiring and promoting (even the management training programs, where it is 100% Chinese trainees!)
    - Compensation is lacking, but for only the senior most people who are in favor.
    - Relationship Management is not widely client facing (RMs) nor sophisticated to attract and retain commercial and mainstream clients. Most banking products are line-driven, therefore this "not ready for prime-time" RM problem cascades into product groups who are impacted by lack of new middle market clients, thus fall short of their goals.
    - Banking platform (products/technology) is still evolving, which makes it hard to bring in mainstream clients who are used to a robust product and service offerings, expecting online channel delivery as well.
    - Operations are very remedial and there are severe language issues that create problems internally and externally, which has gained horrible client reputation.
    - Senior Executives and other seasoned professionals find their skill sets going backwards while at East West Bank due to the above issues and inability to perform what they were hired for.
    - Reputational risk exists for seasoned employees who find employment at EWB.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    While Executive Management is well grounded in numbers and financials, being predominantly former CPA's, they severely lack in understanding Management and Leadership practices in a way that would truly accelerate their business. They sorely need Executive Coaching from an outside (not internal) reputable firm/individual to help them understand the issues that are limiting their success. EWB Executive Management need to start understanding they're Chinese management practices are not serving them well in a Western business culture - they should adopt a "when in Rome" approach. They may be able to look good on paper with their management of the financials, but they are failing miserably underneath it all and have a terrible reputation as a place to work for any real professional. Only newbies, those in search of visas, naïve workers or professionals running out of employment options and view EWB as a "last resort" are willing to work there. Management should also note many of the senior managers who come from the Western world of business are looking for jobs because they see the issues once they are employed and know the average time at the bank for them is less than 24 months. EWB could be a really special and even more successful bank, but Executive Management would need better self-awareness and maturity to put their egos aside to invest in the necessary change. Unfortunately, the bank's overall success masks the sins of what's really going on inside and fuels the wrong perception/interpretation of the growth numbers for outsiders.

    If you want to grow and expand your client base beyond the "Chinatown" banking, you need to make sure your RMs are client facing in the right way: language skills, articulate, can relate to prospect and have the right approach - not demanding. Additionally, you need to have a robust set of products and services with Operations people who again, know how to communicate in the right way and handle issues in a professional manner.
