    I have been working at Environmental Defense full-time (more than 3 years)


    -Great mission and cause to work for
    -More corporate than most non profits, more organized
    -Excellent flexibility and work-life balance


    -Organization needs to invest in staff and training- management could use some help
    -Lack of upward mobility, especially for junior level staff- the organization fails to hire within
    -EDF doesn't always live up to its values- the lack of diversity, in terms of ethnicity and thought evidences this
    -Not as progressive or innovative as the organization touts itself to be

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    1. Invest in your people. If you're hiring management, they need to know how to manage projects as well as people. If they don't, get them training! It's unfair for staff to suffer under an inexperienced manager.

    2. Don't underestimate junior level staff. They deserve to be mentored and promoted. It's unfortunate that many of them end up leaving when they are more than qualified to move up in the EDF ranks.

    3. The organization is overwhelmingly.... not diverse. Hire people of different races, sexual orientations and political affiliations. With diversity in staff, you'll create more innovative solutions and different ways to approach issues that the organization would never be able to develop with the same voices and same experiences.
