    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

    HP has great products - their engineers really understand what is required to address changing market needs. They have a developed distribution model that reaches almost every potential user of these products.

    Cons

    Their internal culture is toxic with an underlying arrogance that undermines Executive Management's ability to successfully execute the organizational change necessary to execute their turnaround. Their Sales compensation programs are not structured to drive the behavior necessary to accomplish their goals.

    Their operational systems are disconnected and their internal processes are primarily manual. Their Sales/Operational Management Teams have been grown from the inside and do not have the experience/knowledge necessary to develop solutions to the above problems.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Before I left I shared a number of ideas and fixes with Executive Management. What I determined was that there was an experience/knowledge gap between Executive Strategy and Sales/Operational Execution.

    HP needs to hire people from the outside into Sales/Operational Executive Management positions and give them the authority to eliminate obstacles to success.
