    Pros

You should have a good amount of job security as the Houston tax department is always understaffed at every level from management to entry level so if you make any effort to do your job you probably won’t be fired. The company itself has a large amount of sick, vacation, and personal days. Also the tax department is very lenient on letting you leave early if you need to take care of something during regular business hours and making up those hours at a future time. The company as a whole seems to have pretty good benefits.

    Cons

I learned quickly to just not talk to anyone and keep to myself. After being stuck in the same position for a very long time without being promoted I decided that it was better to go back to public accounting than to keep working there. I was underpaid but the tax department pays by the hour so I was able to make up for it by working a large amount of hours the last busy season I was there and earn a ton of overtime. I am now back in public accounting trying to learn the skills that will get me into a high paying tax position in the energy industry in Houston. I made the mistake of not going to work for an energy company after my working in public accounting the first time. I don’t understand why but management seemed more interested in hiring people from outside of the company that had no experience in doing mutual fund tax returns than in promoting current senior associates and assistant managers that were very qualified to fill the positions that were being filled by outside hires. I decided I would not stay here and have the same thing happen to me.

    Advice to Management

Increase pay, reduce workload, realize that most deadlines are not critical deadlines, learn the meaning of the word material when it comes to accounting, communicate often and effectively, learn how to use modern technology, learn how to be decisive, learn how to lead, inspire hope instead of fear and dread, realize that the learning curve is very expensive....do everything you can to retain your employees, they are a major stakeholder of the firm, learn also that shareholders and EPS are not the only important goal, go back to school and learn modern management techniques
