Competitive pay when compared to other retailers. The work is a lot of fun and the staff is usually really great. Also a good opportunity to learn about home improvement and construction if your willing to pursue it.
The "Promote from within" statement is a flat out lie. For most associates the ceiling is department manager. The company regularly brings in inexperienced upper level managers from other retail backrounds which creates serious tension with the tenured associates trying to move up. Promotion is a "who you know" situation, accurate and honest appraisals of employee performance are rare. The poor managers spend most of their time just trying not to get blamed for things.
Advice to Management
Everything in the end comes down to the capabilities of your management staff. Spend more time and energy preparing them instead of throwing people into the pool to see if they can swim.
