There are lots of ways in which Motorola provides compensation to reward its engineers. Tuition reimbursement, stock options, quarterly performance bonuses, and employee stock investment plan are the tools to keep people aboard with an otherwise below the average base salary. If you are willing to take responsibility, you CAN actually learn A LOT on the job. Just don't rely solely on your management to provide you with this training.
The work/life balance was horrible for quality engineers, who were capable of getting things done. Opportunities for advancement and growth were absent and were mitigated with once-in-a-while promotions. Many projects had unrealistic expectations and deadlines.
Advice to Management
Listen to your engineering staff and do not burn them out.
