    The past is not prologue

I have been working at Riverbed Technology (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good camaraderie and collegiality. Life-work balance. Interesting people and projects. Reasonable ability to move between groups. Offices in both SF and the South Bay, and the ability to work from both or either. Overall, it has been a very good place to work.

    Cons

No past review remains relevant, for good or ill. Riverbed has been acquired and taken private. With new owners, a 20% RIF, increased attrition and internal reformation underway, Riverbed is best considered a new company, and not entirely stable.

    Advice to Management

I am no expert in company consolidation and liquidation. It seems to me that if the new owners do not want to lose many of their best developers to attrition in a booming tech economy, they need to rally R&D around a compelling purpose. But from a financial perspective, that attrition might be the right choice.
