Current Employee - Vice President in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Royal Bank of Scotland full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Strong camaraderie amongst the people
    - Working hours fairly relaxed with 8am-5:30pm being the norm for most
    - Colleagues are high caliber always willing to share and invest time educating others
    - Market perception of RBS talent pool remains positive offering strong branding for employees

    Cons

    - Business is contracting from an international platform to a UK retail focused bank with limited scope for career opportunities outside the UK market.
    - UK government ownership continues to weigh on management adding to what is already a highly political organization
    - Limited transparency around vision of the bank and lack of empowerment amongst management
    - Doing deals is hard... Central based Compliance, legal and risk functions dictate the banks willingness to do deals in-spite of strong business justifications. The bank is focused on reducing RWA's, freeing-up capital and reducing risk exposures, making the conventional deal-making process challenging and long-winded
    - No bonus culture at all

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Empower management at divisional level
    - Demonstrate pragmatism around business decisions
    - Provide alternative ways of rewarding employees via career development across products and geographies

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO
