I have been working at The Home Depot full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Working in an atmosphere where you can walk a lot, get fresh air, not sit in a cubicle, and laugh out loud! Health benefits are very competitive, but still a little too high. Varying schedules that may be good for some, and not great for others. They range anywhere from 5am to midnight, and even overnight shifts available at some stores. Ability to transfer and work in other stores all over the USA. You can be an assistant manager right off the street with a bachelors degree, mor you can be promoted from within. Potential for growth is really very good.

    Cons

The company is getting more and more like a Walmart store. I have been with the company for 16 years. They are hiring less full time associates, and more part time and seasonal employees. This waters down the expertise that customers get. The wages have also dropped significantly, and people who stay employed with Home Depot get very small raises that don't even keep up with the cost of living. If they aren't careful, they will go the way ERNST did. Customer service will suffer, then customers will stop coming all together. A once great company to work for is now becoming only average compared to other big-box retail stores. More companies need to model after Costco, and remember that treating their employees well, pays off in the end. They knew it in the beginning, but have forgotten that by bowing to the stock market demands.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that you work with people, not robots. Remember the Home Depot values!! Remember how the company started, and don't give in to the corporate and stock market grunts! Stand up for what is right for people, not for what you think will make you rich. Bring back longevity bonuses, and reward your top performers with better pay. I'm afraid that Frank Blake is leaving. He has been with the company a long time, and has tried so hard to bring back values that Bob Nardelli tried hard to crush.
