Current Employee - Staff Research Associate III  in  San Francisco, CA
Current Employee - Staff Research Associate III in San Francisco, CA

I have been working at UC San Francisco full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I previously worked in industry, and I have found that at UCSF I was quickly introduced to a wider variety of techniques and skills than in prior employment. The work is generally interesting and the postdocs and intelligent and energetic. I find that most staff members work regular hours and the benefits are good.

    Cons

Job stability is a problem, since it is difficult to sustain reliable grant funding. The pay tends to be lower than in industry. Sometimes the principle investigators are less focused, quirkier and capable of managing than the research directors in industry, although this statement can be disputed, I am sure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management has to spend most of the time looking for funding in a decreasing pool of resources, making it difficult to focus or take risks. Try to maintain an interest in the science, rather than positioning towards the funding. Of course, this is difficult, and I don't envy you the responsibility.
