I worked at US Department of Veterans Affairs full-time

    Pros

One of the great benefits of Social Work is the diversity that the field itself offers. As a Social Worker at the VA you have access to various practice areas. The VA offers medical care and beyond. Its comprehensive care allows social workers to practice in a variety of areas including: Nursing Home, Infectious Disease Clinics, Palliative Care, Oncology,. & Housing for Homeless Vets. Though there is no general Department of Social Services, like most hospitals, the Social Workers have a great rapport amongst each other, often collaborating resources, processing difficult cases and planning various training events.

    Cons

As you find with many federal positions people often become complacent and aren't as professional and compassionate as they should be, as they feel that their jobs are thoroughly secure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A greater commitment to providing free continuing education and career development. More incentives encouraging staff to go above & beyond. Which in return enhances the quality care that our nation's Veteran's receive.
