Western Union - a great job with a few caveats.

I have been working at Western Union full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Benefits are insane - great PTO, good Bonus plan (if financial targets are met), tuition reimbursement, etc. Good team members, great location, relaxed-but-still-professional atmosphere. Amazingly good work/life balance.

    Cons

As with any for-profit corporation, quarterly earnings and re-orgs put most teams on edge and in fear of layoffs. We have just turned the corner from a major transformation/re-org effort, and it seems to be paying off, but it doesn't eliminate the fear of layoffs if we have a bad quarter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop wasting money on "internal marketing" to make us feel good about our products. Focus on talent development instead. Seeing a hard-working colleague laid off only to then see hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on fancy new conference rooms and a "hip" cafeteria is distressing.

Managers and Directors are fearful of pushing back against VPs when it comes to workloads. We've had major cuts in resources and staff, and have outsourced a number of functions to contractors who quite frankly have not been performing well and we end up having to pick up their slack despite losing people. But it seems as though the "do more with less" mantra and fear of being laid off for not "performing" prevents people from setting and meeting realistic goals. Fast, Good, & Cheap - you can't do all three - pick two or let your managers re-prioritize.
