A great learning opportunity

Technical Service (Current Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I have been working at 3M full-time

ProsAlways challenged, never bored, always learning, very ethical company, travel opportunities, great ammenities, good pay, good stock options, good benefits

ConsSome of the management does not have great leadership qualities, top management should really listen to employees better, employee performance review could be better

Advice to Senior Managementwork life balance is not the best, each employee is performing the job of three employees, morale could be boosted. If you need to hire another person that has the same job as a current employee and you decide to hire that person at a higher job level then you should respect your current employee and promote them to that job grade as well.

Pretty good

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at 3M full-time

ProsGood benefits, solid team & leadership for the most part, good values, solid ethics.

ConsMissing pieces in operations and marketing that prevent them to being a better division in all aspects. Under-pay employees compared to other Fortune 500 companies. They are a traditional, conservative and slow moving in their processes and decision making. Not aggressive enough in their marketing. All roads lead to Minneapolis so in order to move up anywhere in the company you have to move to Minnesota. They used to offer pensions and don't anymore. The pension I had still was not the biggest incentive to stay due to better opportunities that suit my company preferences and work style better. For the younger generation, they need to find more ways to retain talent.

Good place to start.

Technical Aide (Current Employee)
Maplewood, MN

I have been working at 3M part-time for more than 3 years

ProsI did this job while in school and after I graduated while looking for F/T opportunities. The hours were great and I had a flexible schedule that could adapt to my school schedule. I also had a great supervisor so I felt appreciated and liked coming to work.

ConsYou reach an hourly cap in pay. I got there within the first few months of being there so I wish I could have made more. My team's morale seemed low. I wish they had more opportunities for Technical Aides to begin Full Time or move to Full Time positions.

A solid place to work - lots of room for growth (depends on your division)

Supply Chain Analyst (Current Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I have been working at 3M full-time for more than 3 years

ProsBeing in my 30s I'm one of the "younger" crowd at 3M in my division and there are a lot of employees planning to retire and move on in the next few years, which gives people in my age range room for growth. It's encouraging and they are working on learning how to develop their employees accordingly.

ConsImplementing SAP in 2 years or so and there is a lot of fear around the corporate offices about how this will affect their business style and processes. I'm looking forward to it, but there is a lot of heartache going on about what could happen after implementation. The training needed is extensive and anyone starting at the company now will have to learn everything for the current process and then relearn the "new" way in 2 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementDevelop your people, encourage them to learn and make sure they are at your side for the implementation of new technologies.

Great Company

Product Engineer (Current Employee)
Nevada, MO

I have been working at 3M full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat company, amazing benefits. I would recommend anyone to work here

ConsManagers tend to rise up the ranks moving from place to place... doesn't mean they're a good manager. They then tend to spend time trying to move up, instead of focusing on the job at hand.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut more stock into the work done towards a job instead of having people climb the ladder so fast.

Good, stable job in growing industrial sector environment

Senior Engineering Specialist (Current Employee)
Saint Paul, MN

I have been working at 3M full-time for more than 10 years

ProsHonest co-workers, a lot of flexibility to get the job done, within limits (see below). Very interesting work, there's always something new going on, both in the product and process equipment aspects of the job.

ConsManagement stingy on 'discretionary spending' which is vital to networking for maximum effectiveness in position. Pay increases are modest. Senior technical staff have minimum spending authority.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide spending authority to senior technical staff, and hold them accountable for results of the spending.
