The hours are horrible

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Aéropostale part-time for more than a year

ProsThe discount is pretty good, only if you like the clothes.

ConsNot enough hours to be able to get a paycheck to live on.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive more hours to the stores.

Below average retailer for store management

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Milwaukee, WI

I worked at Aéropostale full-time for more than a year

ProsAggressive bonus options
Fun and very Fast paced
Good retailer to start out at as far as learning one way of providing service, but definite opportunities abound

ConsUnrealistic expectations of salaried management
Very reactive to business, but never proactive enough to allow managers to plan.
Regional management was very inappropriate and unprofessional.

Advice to Senior ManagementSolicit more feedback from store level employees and management. There were no excuses for the comments made by regional management about hiring practices and the "culture" of Aeropostale.

Stressful, No Executive Consistency

Assistant Manager (Former Employee)
Rochester, NY

I worked at Aéropostale full-time for more than a year

Pros-good discount, most stores do not force you to wear Aero clothing
-company is based on great values
-the store rally's held during peak seasons are pretty awesome
-meeting nice co workers that turn into lifelong friends

Cons-company is not overly concerned about your work life balance
-holidays are stressful at this retailer and payroll seems to be an issue every year
-every year corporate expects more of you, while giving you less payroll and more tasks
-bonus plans are almost unreachable, they lure you in by telling you you have so much opportunity to make tons more money thru bonuses yet they make the goals so high that you can literally go for AN ENTIRE year without making one
-Executives sometimes play favorites, they allow some managers to close only one night a week, while others close
-company is full of smiles, but are they sincere?executives pretend to care about your personal life YET they make you open earlier every year on holidays, give you tons of black out dates for vacation and expect you to work 10 hour days and do not care about morale

Advice to Senior Management-district managers should be held more accountable by regional managers
-district managers should keep their word on consistent management schedules, it is unfair to other members of management to have poor work life balance when their bosses have a great schedule

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Way overworked! Not given tools to succeed.

Store Manager (Former Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I worked at Aéropostale full-time for more than a year

ProsSomewhat decent pay for retail.
earn one personal day a month.

ConsNever given enough hours,to properly run store.
Direction from home office is never consistent
Don't have an effective training program.
ridiculously long hours you are required to work during holiday
Low price point men's a constant battle with cheap customers.

I was hired by Aero thinking there would be a lot of opportunity, boy was I wrong. The company offers littles opportunity for advancement unless you just want to move to a higher volume store. Store managers are given little freedom to actually run the store. the DM spends all of their time micro-managing instead of working to help train the managers.
They recently made changes to management head counts so many stores are required to run with only 2 full time managers. I was hired and left in a store with a newly hired AM as well and left to fend for myself without help from the DM on how to run the store. And if you are down a manager you will get no help from others stores, the SM is expected to work all of their hours as well as the management hours of the manager you are short(even if it is just bc your manager is on vacation)
The company is constantly running and changing promotions that are confusing to the customer( once we even changed promotion half way through the day).
Also the black out dates for not being able to take vacation are worse than any other retail place I have worked, bc in addition to what is listed in the handbook the dm and rm will just make up days that you can't take vacation (ie last day of the month, last saturday of the month, spring break, mothers/fathers day weekend, Easter weekend)
If you are thinking of leaving your current retail job for aero(especially in the St. Louis/Kansas City/Springfield area) I would try to do as much research as possible and try to talk to people who work or used to work there. it won't be hard to find many who used to work there.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide enough hours for stores to run effectively and successfully.

Zero Strategy

Associate Manager (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Aéropostale full-time for more than a year

Pros-Truly a friendly bunch of people. Hardly any 'bitchy' fashion types
-good work/life balance
-if you're a complacent type, you can surely be a 'lifer'.
-good vacation days and benefits

Cons-Only way to get promoted is to stay much longer than necessary, or to get an offer elsewhere and hope for a counter.
-no marketing strategy whatsoever
-constant and moronic changes to appease business needs on the day to day, vs any kind of longterm strategy.
-Had first year of no bonuses in company history, and i believe it will be a trend now.

Advice to Senior Management-fire yourselves, and hire people who understand what a strategy is and how to implement one.
-The nepotism is demoralizing, and you are losing talented people because of it. More importantly, be covert about it, because the people you give a halo to are embarrassingly dumb, and make you look the same.
-Pretending to pull the wool over your employees eyes is offensive and results in higher turnover.

Awesome for sales associates, not so much for managers.

Assistant Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Aéropostale full-time for more than a year

ProsMentoring high school kids on responsibility and teamwork, Most managers are willing to work at other stores when needed, Decent pay compared to most clothing retailers; Charity-oriented company;

ConsTakes way too long to be promoted within this company, because they would rather recruit from competitors and pay them less; Store managers do not make overtime, so they are expected to work 60-70 hours a week to get things done without going over on payroll; Given too many projects from corporate with no extra hours to get it done

Advice to Senior ManagementHire more from within instead of making managers wait 10-15 years to manage their own store; Give extra hours for the constant marketing and promo changes; More hours for floorsets

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend

Mandatory minimum of over 250 overtime hours at large volume locations

Associate Manager (Current Employee)

I have been working at Aéropostale full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat team-working, problem-solving, and relationship-building, but start at a lower volume location until you have the operational tools mastered.

ConsHighly-restrictive payroll. Store managers make no income after 40 hours per week, regularly must work well past that. All other managers make supplemental pay after the 40 hour work week. Corporate HQ has a knee-jerk response to business trends.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain and coach, then develop your role models to be highly effective in all aspects of business acumen, therefore allowing you to delegate more responsibly.
