  1. Great company but struggles with management leadership

    I worked at A123 Systems full-time

    Pros

Great technology and the opportunity to have a big impact

    Cons

Solid leadership was an issue before the bankruptcy, but post bankruptcy and purchase by Wanxiang has left the company floundering. The primary focus is reducing cost: which is a good thing. But, there is also a view among many employees that the company isn't making the good solid investments for the long term. While Wanxiang did make some changes, they are a very hands-off company and left much of the A123 leadership team in place.

    Advice to Management

People need to see the upside. What's in it for the employees other than just employment. Benefits are practically nil, there are no stock options or company ownership opportunities and benefits are very limited.

This company could be a great place to work when/if it becomes profitable.

    Pros

The interesting technology at A123, from both the product perspective and the manufacturing perspective, draws many talented people to work there. It has a physically pleasant working environment, as far as manufacturing plants go. There is no union, and most of the staff is easy to work with.

    Cons

The Li-ion battery cell business has not yet reached it's projected profitability levels. (thus the recent bankruptcy) This has led to substantial employee turn-over over the past year.

    Pros

A123 offers a tremendous opportunity to learn and grow as a professional. Just get ready to work hard for your success. The company has a strong core of smart and hardworking people. The technology is impressive.

    Cons

Sometimes limited information sharing from top management. Information goes up, but not much comes back down. Long hours. Not much priority given to work life balance.

    Advice to Management

The company needs to do a better job vetting markets and put more energy and resources behind manufacturing process development.

    Pros

Great benefits. Good front-line management. Excellent work conditions and competent engineers.

    Cons

The automotive battery business for all-electrics is not as hot as it was thought. There have been a lot of layoffs and very likely more to come.

    Advice to Management

More realistic expectations of the market. They started very strong but a bit too strong. This led to layoffs and work stoppages when business dropped.

    Pros

High flying growth company. Well worth the professional investment. Senior management team very strong, open and genuine about doing the right thing. Great people & smart talent from the top of the house, down and across. No office environment including C-level. Benefits are rich and you won't be bored if you are open and willing.

    Cons

Lots of growing pains. Not all can be addressed given the fast growth. Work/life balance is not always even. Think start-up pace and energy. 9-5 Coasters do not apply.

    Advice to Management

Keep it real and share information! MI folks not always aligned with HQ and vice versa.
