I worked at AAR as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I learned a lot about how IT works in a real business environment. Lots of expertise and tricks of the trade learned and easily accessible. Most of the employees who IT supported were grateful.

    Cons

Company Executives know nothing about technology and just expect it to work like magic and are confused when IT can't just wave a magic wand and 'POOF!' it works. Another problem this company hires a lot of family members within itself (IT department didn't seem to have this problem). People who aren't related to someone else within the company or married to someone else within the company are dismissed and disposable. Lots of 'I work for (insert higher up name) so my issue is a priority" which got real annoying.

    Advice to Management

Learn how technology works before making financial decisions about technology or cutting corners may cost more later. Hiring friends and family is OK however giving those people key positions they are not qualified is a huge problem and is going to hurt the company.

    I worked at AAR full-time

    Pros

Entrepreneurial atmosphere and ability to easily move around within the company as desired. The Company has a strong desire to retain employees and keep them motivated.

    Cons

The commute to the suburbs near O'Hare Airport can be a bit stressful given the surrounding traffic. Compensation was a bit light relative to the market for this position.

    Advice to Management

The Company's management team is seasoned and strong. They are clearly focused on buying and building business that complement each other.

I have been working at AAR full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Large company with a lot of room for growth and a wide variety of jobs. Lots of company benefits such as on site fitness facility, cafetaria, tuition reimbursements, etc. Company is investing millions of dollars to upgrade its facilities so employees have a more comfortable place to work.

    Cons

Compensation is below industry norms. Cross training and processes are not very standardized. Different people say different things on how something should be done. Makes it difficult for new employees to understand the flow process.

    Advice to Management

Develop an analytics department to get ahead of the industry rather than just getting by with day to day activities. More emphasis needs to be placed in collecting data in individual departments to a consolidated source that can be shared amongst other departments so the whole company can be smarter and learn from the work of other employees.
