Great place to work, the employees are committed to the mission.

Marketing Manager (Former Employee) Washington, DC

ProsGood work-life balance philosophy in most, if not all departments. The company makes various types of training available and facilitates registration. In addition to being a pleasant work environment, the community service opportunities add to the value of AARP as a community entity. The cafeteria is also great to have.

ConsThe matrix management structure can be challenging to navigate when decisions are needed.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep employees engaged by sharing important information across various department equally.

Excellent place to work if you believe in the AARP mission

    Director (Current Employee) Washington, DC

ProsPeople are smart, dedicated and progressive. Salaries are excellent for non-profit work. Working conditions are reasonable. Opportunities for advancement are better than at many other organizations. The organization has clout and uses it most of the time to improve life for older Americans.

ConsManagement and bureaucratic structure are--I believe--far too disorganized. A lot of time, money and talent is wasted because of regular re-organizations. Power struggles at the top of the organization take the edge off of what AARP might accomplish.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep AARP's mission in mind at all times. Keep personal ambitions from creating power struggles that blunt the impact the organization could have.

An awesome organization to work for

    Associate State Director (Current Employee)

ProsAdvocacy for the 50+, working to strengthen Medicare Social Security and the Affordable Care Act. You make a difference each and every day by focusing on advocacy, education and outreach, the foundation programs and more

ConsA huge organization with its own bureaucracy that can be top heavy and at times autocratic. There has been downsizing in some departments and with each change in CEO the organizational culture changes and of late that means more business centric than people centric

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust the staff to do their best work

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend
