    Pros

Growth oriented, ambitious company. Diverse offerings.

    Cons

Lack of support and technical resources.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire the people needed to walk the talk. Saying you are great does not make you great.

I have been working at ABM Industries

    Pros

Experience. Good place to start your career, but not stay more than 2-3 years

    Cons

Not a stable organization, extremely unorganized and unprofessional. The future of the company is very unclear

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actions speak louder than words. Don't just talk about the vision, actually do something

I have been working at ABM Industries full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company is so large that once you are settled in and if you need more hours there are plenty of locations where they can send you. Management is detached to the point where they hardly observe your performance, good for you, bad for the company.

    Cons

Company and management speak of "advancement opportunities" but merit is overlooked when such opportunities are available.
Pay is low, good luck getting any type of raise even if you do a great job.
Management shows lack of judgement for promoting/keeping inept and apathetic supervisors who are unorganized, uninformed, and do as little as possible to maintain their title.
    High turnover rate.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The lack of integrity in management reduces moral of good employees and deteriorates the performance of the team overall. Most of the employees see this as a dead end job where only the friends of management will move up and merit is overlooked especially when management is detached from on site operations.

I worked at ABM Industries full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

They have great forward thinkers with amazing ideas for conserving energy, building for a greener tomorrow and below competitive rates.

    Cons

Their ideas remain ideas and the management tree remains male-controlled with no forward thinking. There is no uniformity or communication between corporate and managed branches as to what the future visions actually are. Customer bids are to include all the forward-thinking innovations and green products, but none of that is communicated down to the executors, it is simply for customers' eyes. Often times, managers and staff are expected to give of their time and labor without compensation and threat of non-compliance lurking. The only advancement opportunities are for white males who run hispanic crews (legal or not), qualified or not.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Follow through with company vision and replace any management that is going about things in back-alley fashion instead of promoting them because they talk a good game.

    Pros

Like many large security companies, they are always seeking to fill security positions because of the ever "revolving" door.

    Cons

No realistic chance for advancement opportunities. No additional continual training received after the initial required state and client training. Can not support your family based on the hourly rates. Many employees have a second and even a third job. There is a lack of meaninful communication between upper management and employees and the organization overall. ABM Security Services is just one division of ABM Industries. Other divisions include Janitorial (core division), Parking, HVAC, Electrical, Landscaping, Maintenance, Mechanical, and others. They do not specialize in security like other security companies so not all resorces are alocated solely to security.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide more security training to security officers and superiors and foster a real environment of advancement opportunity. Raise the hourly rates of employees to a livable wage so employees don't have to take on two more jobs and report to work tired and you will be able to retain more employees who are loyal. Meet with your staff periodically to find out the real truth of what is going on within their assigned sites. Raise the bar in the hiring standards. Most of all, thank your employees for doing a good job (when warranted), it will go a long way with your staff.

I worked at ABM Industries full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Part of large organization with deep, vertical integration and sophistication.

    Cons

Parking division is immaterial and gets slighted in support resources, disproportionate to its high risk.
Financial reporting systems are ineffective user-hostile byzantine labyrinths not designed for central control and monitoring of site operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Set the tone at the top for ethical behavior. Put clients' interests before your own. Think beyond the current quarter results. At least pretend to care about the rank and file employees.

I have been working at ABM Industries

    Pros

It brought me into something that I do not have any experience before. Also, I like the people that I am working with especially that i get to work directly with the VP, Managers and the Sr. staff. They have taught lots of great things.

    Cons

Technology wise, it is not a company that is willing to spend big money. So far we are using Citrix and Lotus Notes as our email system and they can be very slow and hard to deal with. I know lots of employees are spending lots of extra time to figure out how to use them and by calling the IT department to report the problems.
