I worked at AIG full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - good benefits (paid time off pool of days), option to work from home, flex time

    Cons

Some managers are better than others. Performance review process is not transparent. Over the past few years, there were rolling layoffs. Management was trying to fit all NY employees into one building to reduce real estate costs. They also started outsourcing many positions. There was not much job stability. There was a group called WOW (way of working) that infiltrated each department for a certain amount of time. Their goal was to understand the department's purpose, determine any inefficiencies and how to reduce those inefficiencies....which usually resulted in layoffs.

I worked at AIG full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good Work/Life Balance: Good Time Off

    Cons

Lots of quiet large lay offs; constantly changing executive management plans; executives constantly providing promotional opportunities for themselves; lack of promotional opportunities or opportunities to move around the company laterally; lots of dead end departmental positions; executive management has no interest in knowing the real talent within all levels of the company and making sure they are in the right position rather than just performing lay offs; good salaries going in but lack of performance based increases (lots of "you performed exceptionally well this year but no one, but the executives, are getting raises this year".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Note the cons and don't be afraid of getting to know all levels of your staff especially your longtime employees (most of whom you have already laid off) because you are sending a lot of really talented people to your competition.

I worked at AIG as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

senior leadership seminars. there are 6 or 7 seminars presented by the C level executives in various departments of the company, specifically to all summer interns. very good way to help us understand all aspects of business. work hours are typically 9-5, with low stress. Great pay for interns. $35/h.

    Cons

lack of company culture. people here just come to work and then go home. very few social events to engage employees. Office is always quiet and uptight. few opportunities to get to know ppl who are not on your team, which is typically the size of 5 or 6.
