Horrible leadership and a terrible union entitlement mentality.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time

ProsTo reach the required twenty word minimum I will list the following as Pros:
Coworkers
Coffee
Paycheck
That's about it.

ConsInept and unqualified leadership.
Drag your feet, passive aggressive, entitlement mentality union.
No value put on dedicated people whatsoever.
No opportunity.
No balance between work and life for those that actually do the work.
Egregious bonus percentages to unproductive and unqualified "management" .
(when applicable, of course)
A generally demoralizing place to work.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut people in positions of leadership that actually know the processes and are knowledgeable in their areas of responsibility.
Remove those that are continually falling short and never held accountable.
Acknowledge and reward positive performance (monetarily and with opportunity) and put SOME value back into the great resource of people that work within the facilities.
Spend some of that hard lost cash on retaining the talent that matters instead of rewarding those powers that be, that are contributing more to the demise than the growth, with exorbitant bonus payouts and bloated salaries when we're in the tank and still facing problems.

Simply, do the right thing. We all want the same bottom line. Reward good performance. Correct poor performance. Make statements with good changes. Steward the company assets discerningly and invest in the properties and the people. Improving the culture and the company will show the hard working, dedicated and valuable workforce that the leadership respects the place and those that make it run and that will help keep the real talent.

Upper management very unprofessional, don't treat people with respect!

Production Shift Supervisor (Former Employee)
Ashland, KY

I worked at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

ProsPay and benefits were fairly decent, especially for the area.

ConsTreat people poorly, hourly and salary. Plant manager is an arrogant, obnoxious person with no people skills or respect for others. The most unprofessional manager I have ever been around.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that your employees are more than worker bees, they are people with families and issues just like you. Stop the "screw the hourly" mentality and work together.

Glass wall, glass ceiling, unable to envision a changing and growing future.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at AK Steel Holding Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFlat management structure allows talented individuals freedom to explore new ideas. Many individuals within the lower to mid management level of the company are quite capable.

ConsNew ideas are not embraced or rewarded. Must quietly develop yourself and unfortunately move on.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmbrace diverse education and business background; reward diverse thinking. Be honest and open with all employees regarding job openings. Allow decision making at the proper level without continual executive intervention or override.
