Aldi store managers are well paid but overworked to the point of exhaustion, then put out to pasture.

    Pros

If you work hard, you can move up from cashier, to shift mgr, to store mgr very quickly. Its a challenging and fast paced work environment. You are not stuck in one department like other retail environments, store managers do everything from training employees, scheduling, throwing trucks, building displays, ordering, pretty much everything and anything (bring your power tools). Smaller staff and store size allows you to really know coworkers and customers.

    Cons

Stores are usually run understaffed or overstaffed. Turnover is incredibly high (48% in Midwest region). Training programs are usually rushed through leading to an unknowledgeable workforce. District managers and above are promoted outside the company ONLY and often times fresh out of college receiving the same lack of training leading to poor leadership. Store conditions and adherence to policy and procedures vary drastically from store to store meaning you never know what you're walking into. Company will deny compensation after promising it often due to unclear communication amongst management (vacation days, travel time & mileage, hours worked at other stores etc). Shift mgrs especially do not get compenstated for managerial duties they are required to do (company requires them to be clocked on as cashiers a majority of the time which pays $5 less). No HR department or open door policy. Complaints of harassment, discrimination, or unfairness are often ignored or punished.

    Advice to Management

Great compamy, poor leadership. Could improve if company actually followed it's own policies and procedures. Major ethical issues within that need to be addressed!

    Pros

Great pay, good benefits, opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Employees are overworked for the pay that they get, the scheduling is inconsistent (managers will change your schedule without consulting you and expect you to show up, even if you were unaware of the changes), a lot of times there are not enough people scheduled to close or open the store, late nights, everything you do is timed and you are expected to speed through all your tasks.

    Advice to Management

    Calm down.

  3. Great pay, long hours.

Pays well at all levels, but the work load can be both physically and mentally exhausting over time.

    Pros

    It's all about the money!!!!

I've done every job inside a store; I've cashiered, been a supervisor, management trainee and store manager. All of those positions pay above what I would consider market value when compared to direct competitors. I'm married with kids so I had the family benefit package. I'm not sure if I'd call it a "pro," but it was OK and they did include dental and vision.

The days literally fly by. You can work an 8-12 hour shift and wonder where your day went. You are never bored working for Aldi and most folks find they don't need a gym membership, because of the physical nature of the work.

    Cons

As a store manager you are the only salaried person working in the building so you not only have to make up unexpected staffing needs a lot of time, but you also get all the alarm calls at off hours. The hours become consuming, it's not unusual for a manager to work 60-70 hours per week. The money was great, but I literally never had any time to spend any of it, much less see my family.

Besides the normal brain damage of trying to "herd the kittens" in a retail environment a store manager also is the lead stocker, cleaner, organizer and display setter. I'm in my early forties and the physical load finally became too much when coupled with the hours. I slipped two discs in my back and was never the same after that. I required months of rehab and several procedures.

    Advice to Management

I understand that the "productivity" number is everything to Aldi. However, I've seen a lot of employees get injured trying to do things that they should have had help doing, but there was no help available. There are also countless potentially decent (above average) employees who quit because they don't want to drink the Aldi aid that is so heavily pushed. I think it's time to for management to revisit how they staff their stores, you can't keep breaking employees.

    Good Pay
    Team Work

    Cons

If you're a part timer you don't even get 25 hours. Very minimum to no hours.

    Advice to Management

Don't make the hours sound so promising! If you're going to bring someone on board make sure you give them hours.
