    I worked at AMETEK full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Good people to work with (At least in the production side). Great benefits (at least 1 exception) for single people. Opportunity to interact with various cultures and learn multi-national business internally.

    Cons

    Frustrating mid and top level management. Often contradictory to each other to subordinates. Benefits seemed great, except tuition reimbursement (contractual requirements and ability of manager to override reimbursement for courses not deemed to influence your daily duties (MBA programs include multitude of functions, not all align with current role within company).
    Subordinates looked at as pawns, and a very top-heavy company seems to refuse to acknowledge support structure needed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Reduce number of managers at all levels (you don't need a manager to supervise one person). Filter managerial prospects better to have those with ability to lead as managers (micromanagers tend to demean people). Evaluate internal candidates for growth potential, internal growth does not seem likely.

    I worked at AMETEK

    Pros

    The corporation originally was based on a high degree of autonomy within each of the individual operating units. The corporate offices were primarily a efficient financial mechanism to support the growth of the divisions. A family atmosphere was strongly promoted and respect for the individual was very good. Over the past several years however, bottom-line at all costs thinking has been the norm - to a very high degree, many of the original principles are slipping away quickly.

    Cons

    One - there is no visibility on future of the individual employee's career. Bottom-line at all costs thinking has become the norm. Although this has been sold as the best path to enhance shareholder value, many times margins have slid through "meat-ax" plant closures. I would be careful to have some candid talks with current employees before accepting a position. Check Ametek's history of acquisitiion and closure. I personally know of colleagues who accepted transfers to locations that were ceased less than 6 months after a move. As an investor, I sold my holdings 2 years ago and have no plans to repurchase. If you like the GE model, this may be the place for you!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Restore some of the values of the Lux era. Bring some balance to the numerous stakeholders. Shareholder enhancement has been very good. However, the other stakeholders in successful respected corporations, namely employees, communities, and product quality have suffered.

    Cons

    Political, very short term growth oriented...expect employees to work 12 hours everyday..no praise upon a job well done... individual business units doing well is never enough..corporate sets unreasonable targets

    I worked at AMETEK

    Pros

    * Family feeling
    * Work with senior mgmt

    Its hard to make the 20 word minimum here. If you are an executive you'll probably be happier here.

    Cons

    * Risk advserse
    * Lacks flexibility
    * Doesn't distinguish between performers
    * Little room for career growth unless you move
    * Low pay
    * Only executives are bonus eligible
    * Only value executives. Non executives are not valued on a whole.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean house and start over. This company desperately needs new leaders to bring a fresh approach to the how things are run.

    I have been working at AMETEK

    Pros

    It used to be a very good place to work for. The management was in-house and has visibility of who does what and how well. Currently, with management located off-site, that visibilit is gone. The only concern is how to make more money at all cost.

    Cons

    No long term vision. Every year there is a new 5-year plan. What was demonized last year is embraced this year and vice-versa.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Establish a long term commitment and stay with it. Have the courage to stand up and say if we want to grow, we need real investment with respect to capital, intellectual resources and time.
