    Great work environment and culture

Software Engineer II (Former Employee) Richardson, TX

ProsMost folks at AMX treat you like family. Many people have been there for a very long time. Low turnover aside from occasional and financially necessary layoffs, and when those have occurred staff have agonized over how to decide who had to be let go, particularly iengineering. If you have a good idea and it makes sense this is a place where most of the time they will let you run with it. Little in the way of absurd beauracracy I had at previous jobs.

ConsHaven't been much for bonuses for a while, no profit sharing plans, however senior management isn't lining thier pockets at the employees expense either. Management sometimes pours R&D into acquired product lines it should have never picked up in the first place as they were inherently flawed to begin with.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrust your staffs input. People who work here for the most part really do think about the well being of the company first and if they tell you something may not be a great idea, there's probably something to it.

    less than is good enough

Lab Tech (Current Employee) Richardson, TX

    Prosgreat people to work with

Consupper management , there is to much of it, its almost one manager for every 3 employee's, making it very hard to get the job done

Advice to Senior Managementpull the uneeded bean counters, this will help in getting product out of the door ontime. Be an industry leader not a follower.

    Great place with no movement.

Senior Software Engineer (Current Employee) Richardson, TX

ProsThe environment and people are very friendly. Everything is casual and it is fairly easy to snag upper management for a few words if you need to. Great work life balance as deadlines seem to always be fudgable. Benefits are good and atmosphere makes you feel like family. Reduced priced catered lunch. Places to take a break if you need to stop thinking for a minute (volleyball court, basketball court, ping pong and fussball tables). You get to see a lot of new technology work with most of the major hardware manufacturers, which gives some variation in task and challenges. Even the individuals who had to be laid off (after a bad quarter) were assisted by HR for months afterwards to help them get new jobs with other companies.

ConsIts a place to feel like family.. in saying that you are appreciated but not paid for. Compensation is on the lower end but reasonable as it seems to be pretty low stress. Being a mid sized company a bad quarter for sales could mean your job though. Also project management seems to be done pseudo by committee causing feature creep and delays to be the norm. Also it seems to be a company mantra that 80% quality is good enough.

Advice to Senior ManagementStrive for true quality in what is produced on the Software side to keep up with the hardware quality. Keep on trucking with sales into the educational and foreign markets.
