at&t is good for a minute, then it only gets worse

Retail Sales Consultant (Current Employee)
Pasadena, CA

I have been working at AT&T part-time for more than 3 years

Prosperks for sure: you get a decent pay... i started at 12.75 and left the company at 16.00 plus commission.
you get a company phone usually the latest device but there are restrictions
you around technology and thats always fun
and its union.. but thats a joke sometimes too..

ConsTHIS is a SUPER sales job!
TONS of stress, managers always yelling at you
and always something new as your sales goal so you never get strong at anything in particular because it is always shifting.
oh an your commission plan is always getting twisted and you keep earning less money.

Poor Management/Poor Work Environment

Associate Client Support Specialist (Current Employee)
Atlanta, GA

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than a year

ProsGreat benefits for phone, cable, 401k.
Large, stable company
However, not much more....

ConsManagement is very poor. Managers rarely show up and they don't address problems within the workplace.
Work environment is terrible, the people in the office I'm at are unprofessional, immature, rude, and lazy. Clearly upper management did a poor job in the hiring process. Salary is not good and they limit your opportunities of advancement to next to nothing.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire managers with better leadership qualities and who actually know how to manage people.
Better promote the advancement of employees.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great Vendors, Poor support, High Turnover

Business Account Executive (Former Employee)

I worked at AT&T full-time for more than a year

ProsThe vendor products and services are awesome, new, forward thinking and offer training and strong support.

You receive a smartphone from last season, a clunky laptop and an iPad for note taking. Don't expect to maintain connection as your equipment will loose it's signal frequently.

Semi-flexible with time, only if you are favored by management.

Very nice work place for women who seek to work in the corporate world and quick promotions.

Great for a first job or desperate job seeker for a career in sales.

ConsThe company's core solutions are smartphones, tablets and the network, NOT APPLICATIONS. You would be better off working for the vendor.

Account Managers are basically outside Retail Reps in suits with high stress.

Prepare for your job to be in jeopardy every winter season as sales decline, quotas rise.
Also prepare to spend hours, days, weeks maybe even months on non-sales activities to which you are not paid on. All of the systems are outdated and have single functionality: one does this, another does that, go here to get this and there to get that and put the puzzle together.

Trainings inside the company are clustered, unorganized, very time consuming and majority are web based.

Do not expect a lot of support to help you succeed, soon as you present a challenging to management or the team you may as well start your search for a new job.

99% of this workforce turnover every year as everyone realizes the company structure: Top Heavy, Political, Bureaucratic, and hidden discriminatory practices. (if you are not promoted within a year, find another job)

1% of this company receive rewards for participating in unethical behavior and getting away with it, receive the best modules and are handed grand opportunities from management to help them meet their quotas.

Expect constant change in pay structure to receive less earnings. Retail Reps make just as much in store with less effort.

If you have a strong work ethic and a high sense of integrity, this is not the company for you. Also, absolutely forget about work-life balance or advancing your skills.

Advice to Senior ManagementHere is what we want:
Minimum politics
Fair opportunities
Friendlier management
Family orientation
More than sales

Collections Representative

Collections Representative (Former Employee)

I worked at AT&T full-time for less than a year

ProsThe training and support were excellent. They are a stable company with good benefits and pay.

ConsThere was a very adversary relationship between management and employees. The metrics set were not realistic. Anyone could look at the numbers and see that over 70% of the employees failed to meet company goals. Having a bad attitude was just ever disagreeing with management. You can see why AT&T is so unionized. The employees feel they need protection from management.

Advice to Senior ManagementTry to set realistic goals for your employees and don't retaliate against employees just because they mentioned something might not be right.

Pay is the only good thing

I&R Services Tech (Current Employee)

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 10 years

ProsMoney is the best and worst reason to work here. The money is good, but if you are not careful you will get trapped by it.

ConsThere is a huge amount of pressure to meet numbers that have been set by people who have not done the job.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake care of your employees and treat them like people. When employees feel important to a company that company will become important to the employees.

If you have no college education, great way to start

Retail Store Manager (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than a year

Proslots of training
easy work if you can stay focused
constantly changing environment
Without a college degree can make a decent living

ConsLong hours/ no life balance as a manager
No paid mandatory overtime
it all depends on local leadership which can be good or bad
Same old grind every day, not a challenging environment
Feel like a replaceable cog/ no value of employee

Advice to Senior ManagementAT&T is definitely working to get better. The message is clear from upper leadership, and it will be interesting to see the change as retail is a short sighted game.. and valuing employees is a long term benefit. I see the two conflicting now, hopefully it will balance out.

Great pay, bad benefits, terrible bureaucracy.

Senior Technical Director (Current Employee)
Bothell, WA

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 10 years

ProsLarge salary bands, steady work. Can be innovative if in the right group. Future looks good thanks to the wireless leg of the business.

ConsFor a self-professed tech company they are overly focused on HQ (Texas), benefits have gotten progressively worse over time - unless you live in Texas, upper management is often two-faced with employees, and you're forced to spend several weeks on average each year supplementing a non-IT, union job. There is also a glut of lifetime employees that are absolutely entrenched. Be prepared for a process deluge if you work in IT here.

Stuck in an analyst role

IT Business Analyst (Current Employee)
Bothell, WA

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 10 years

ProsFlexible hours and commute options

ConsBenefits cost more every year and cover less despite record profits every year.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't block transfers for 4 years by telling someone they're too valuable to the team to release then lay them off.

No recognition of top preformers, No growth opportunities, No career path options.

Business Account Manager (Current Employee)
San Ramon, CA

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 5 years

ProsPay is good, Benefits are good, and the company can take care of you if you stay for a long term psotion.

ConsPay structures change constantly, and they are never beneficial for the employees. Goals are ridiculous and invite a culture of finger pointing and create no comradery. No vision beyond the current month and the micromanagement of an autonomous field position is cumbersome. Too much politics, not enough promotions based upon merit. In fact, there is zero growth in this position, only contraction and reasons why they cant and refuse to career path the right employees. They promote the dolts, and keep down the natural leaders.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend time selling in the field for longer than a couple hours. Shadow a top preformer for a month. You will realize how much we get crapped on daily.

Build a good comp plan, and dont change it.

There is an "I" in team

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at AT&T

ProsThere is a lot of work, and the pay is good. The technology is interesting and constantly moving forward. There are a couple great managers and staff.

ConsThere is a huge lack of communication and direction. Your responsibilities and duties are unclear, and there is no teamwork. The work is very segmented and there is a lot of time spent on finding out who made a mistake rather than focusing on fixing the process or getting the end result. You constantly have to spend additional time make sure you have proof to "CYA". Not a positive work environment. The majority of the staff are subcontractors and they rarely hire you on as a permanent employee.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide team meetings, ensure staff have a clear understanding of their responsibilities and duties and set goals. Provide resources, empowerment and clear communication to the staff.
