I have been working at AT&T full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Overall, in terms of the consumer technology business, ATT is probably the best company to work for. The pay rate is satisfactory, the commission structure is generally good (although at times, certain company goals do not align with the commission structure), and benefits are top notch, thanks to the Union. If you have the right management, you can thrive at these stores and build some great relationships with your customers, who will in turn be very loyal to you.

In all of the stores i have worked at, the store teams are very close and work well together. There is usually a high level of unity between everyone which definitely makes the store environment a nice place to be. You are expected to be a team player, to carry your share of the weight, and to be fair.

Management at the store level can be broken into three categories:
GOOD: Good leaders that have the qualities needed to run a team, that can think outside the box in order to come up with solutions to problems the team may face.
BAD: Good salesmen/women that were promoted exclusively based on their sales performance, that do not have the necessary qualities of management.
UGLY: Also, there are some managers hired externally that are placed through a "Retail Leadership Development Program." Unfortunately, these are probably the most out of touch management you will likely face in your life. They are numbers-driven, metric-centric, and do not understand the basic aspects of sales. The are corporate parrots that will regurgitate corporate answers to all of your questions.

    Cons

As mentioned above, your experience at ATT will be heavily influenced by the type of management that you have. Some managers will push you to become a better salesperson, as well as teach you extra things in order to build your career advancement opportunity. They understand the art of sales and the personalized human interactions needed to build good relationships.

Others take the negative reinforcement approach. They tell you what numbers you need to hit, the "behaviors" they are expecting (not necessarily behaviors, as much as pitching everything to every customer, regardless of the customer's time, body language, etc.), and threaten you with counselings ("...that may lead up to termination..." is a favorite phrase.)

Also, advancement opportunities are slim to none. They primarily hire senior and upper-middle management externally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember Lagniappe? When i started working for the company 5 years ago, there was a greater focus on real relationships with customers. There was certain face to ATT that is no longer the case. Senior Management has, to a degree, abandoned retail. And if you were half blind, you can tell that there are huge changes happening in the near future. i expect the game plan is to cut down the number of cor stores, open flagship "Apple-esque" centers around the country, and the rest goes via online or third party channels, where you don't have as much overhead. I am not saying it is not a good business decision in the long run, but the old timer middle management is ruining your business, and they need to be swapped out before all of these changes can occur.

I have been working at AT&T

    Pros

    - Good company to work for
    - Strong position in the market both in US and Europe
    - Plenty of opportunities and job variations

    Cons

    - US AT&T is completely different, than other centers (probably because, they are opening them as low cost (even though they will be telling you, that it's not like that))
    - most of the people are being hired through an agency, with contract usually only for 1 year

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More attention should be paid to general employees, as it's actually them, who are doing the work and not the management.

I have been working at AT&T full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Rapidly changing, fast paced work environment, with the right amount of training to help you be successful at what you do.

    Cons

As the business constantly changes, your job can become quickly outdated. Because the company is so large, there really isn't a whole lot of bond between employees.

I have been working at AT&T full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Some of the pros would be the 50% off discount. I was also promoted 2x in my first year after undergrad to a management position

    Cons

The commission pay is taxed at almost 50% so a lot of your money you'll never see. The benefits are so bad it's almost worth it to not have insurance.

I have been working at AT&T

    Pros

Decent pay ($12-20/hr). Decent benefits, 90% insurance after deductible, 50% off AT&T services.

    Cons

Work/Life balance, no family life, only one Saturday off a month. Schedule is always changing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being a manager is about balance. Happy employees are productive employees. Documenting employee performance is a tool, not a weapon.
