Unappreciated and overworked

Senior Specialist Applications Developer (Current Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I have been working at AT&T full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood peers, good vacation policy, good health benefits, good retirement match.

ConsIt feels like we're constantly about to be outsourced. Executive leadership keeps firing people left and right, and expects the rest of us to keep up the same level of work. The current model is to bring in more and more people from outside companies, especially those in India, and the communications issues are just getting worse and worse as a result. It seems that if the executive leadership got their way, they would just send the whole of IT to India and be done with it.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop threatening your talent. Stop offshoring everything.

displaced splicer

Software Developer (Former Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I worked at AT&T full-time for more than 8 years

Prospay benefits..helping customers..working out side

Conslower level management who have all the power of God over their workers and none of the restraint..If a manager likes you , then you can get away with anything, tardy, lazy, useless, poor work ethics, absence....but if any manager does not like you, for any reason, they can make your work experience a living hell..I had a manager who dd not like me, wait for my manager to go on vacation before she came after me for minor non work affecting issues..I had a pair of drumsticks on my desk and was using a wireless head set....the drum sticks were later deemed a weapon..i was allowed to continue use of my personal wireless headset.. I also had a manager interfere with my FMLA which led to it being denied because I was still under Disability when he filed it, without telling me and when I attempted to file, I was told the time period could not be extended, and it led to me being put on disciplinary steps for attendance, yet other employees who missed work were not..(..These managers actions led to me being unavailable to transfer back to my desired job title..I was forced into the job title and the foolishness of the department made it nearly impossible to provide a level of customer service I could be proud of.) ..there is no rule for following guidelines..it is up to managements opinion..these and many more issues led to my resigning from this company..(yes I can prove these claims)

Good pay - treated like a commodity

Retail Sales Consultant (Former Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I worked at AT&T full-time for more than a year

ProsGood pay - union negotiated raises and decent commissions.

ConsCompany does not care about work/life balance or people. Sometimes becomes a choice between ethics and serving the customer.

Advice to Senior ManagementGive your reps the ability to service the customer without subtle job threats through performance metrics and you will bolster your reputation.

AT&T used to be a great place to work in IT, but I wouldn't recommend it now.

Professional - Technical Architect (Former Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I worked at AT&T

ProsAT&T provides decent wages and benefits.

ConsAT&T is outsourcing a lot of IT work. There is not much opportunity for growth, promotions are rare. IT is not a collaborative culture. Direction is decided above and pushed down. Not a fun place to work.

No Future...

Senior Database Administrator (Former Employee)
Saint Louis, MO

I worked at AT&T

ProsAT&T has good salary and benefits. The people I worked with are open, honest, and helpful. I loved telecommuting.

ConsIT Operations is implementing a 'follow the sun' methodology. That means that at least two-thirds of the American jobs are going abroad (Eastern Europe and India). That means there is no future for two-thirds of the current system administrators and database administrators.

Advice to Senior ManagementWhile management books state that 'follow the sun' is wonderful, what does it do to provide a sense of loyalty to your existing employees from your side? Why should they be loyal? Why should they stay? Additionally, you are having those employees who 'follow the sun' pick trouble tickets out of an automated system. That means that there is already a problem identified. Who is it that works on your information systems to avoid problems and trouble? In your new methodology, that's gone...
