Unprofessional work environment, useless mid-level management, and completely unethical

I have been working at Accretive Health full-time

    Pros

They offer a fair benefits package.

    Cons

    - Compensation is below industry standards
    - Mid-level managers do very little to build a rapport with associates. Don't expect your supervisor to speak to you unless they need something. With that said, don't expect them to say hello or acknowledge you in the hallway or break room.
    - Expect to work under hostile conditions, managers and coordinators are allowed/expected to send threats and if you dare to complain to HR then expect a full out war.
    - Most employees are uneducated and have no previous professional work experience which makes the office environment extremely unprofessional and catty. Management encourages this type of behavior thinking that "friendly competition" will motivate (intimidate) employees to work harder
    - There is a lot of turnover. The good managers that we've had have moved on - while the rest of the dolts have stayed and unfortunately have been promoted.
    - The company culture is set up, so that you can only specialize in one specific area which makes it impossible to diversify your scope of knowledge therefore making it difficult to move onto a new job that would require you to know multiple areas of billing
    - Expect little to no training. Management doesn't train anyone - they will only manage you. Coordinators will not train you unless they like you and they will lie to management saying they've trained you to get you in trouble.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please hire professional managers with degrees related to healthcare management or business. Consider doing drug screening on current and future employees - it would be one way to "trim the fat." Please hold coordinators more responsible for their subordinates training. Please force the coordinators to get additional training and education. Most of the coordinators are great billers but horrible at training and managing a small group.

I worked at Accretive Health full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pays well in the industry. Works with some major health systems in the country

    Cons

Leadership tends to have limited experience in the industry and sets expectations with the clients without understanding the clients challenges. Employees are expected to work long hours and if traveling, 80% travel -

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get leadership that has experience and credentials. Those that did left shortly after the IPO.

I have been working at Accretive Health full-time

    Pros

Flexible schedule (can work from home on some days). Employees are generally quite talented. Great central location.

    Cons

Management is insanely rude and doesn't care about employee morale. The department doesn't provide adequate training (it's a sink or swim environment). Quality of services is not a priority- only revenue. Although none of the jobs are commision based, it certainly feels that way as it's such a "productivity" based culture and you must meet daily/weekly quotas or get ready to be threatened with termination. Bonuses and raises are promised for individuals who "put in the extra mile" but that rarely happens. This company/dept has high employee turnover b/c of all the issues and is very unstable. Most employees are jumping ship as soon as they find a better job. The rest who are still here (who haven't landed a another job yet) are getting pretty beat down by all the politics and are extremely unhappy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees and take care of them, or else the company will collapse even faster.

    Pros

Good job for someone out of college with room to grow and move up in the company. The wages, benefits and other perks of the job are good.

    Cons

Problems with work/life balance, its definitely a sink or swim mentality. If your unable to do the job, they will find someone else who can. Unrealistic expectations, management needs to be more clear on what their looking for with the employees day to day job.

    Pros

You are able to learn a lot and grow very fast, most of which is because the lack of focus, direction, guidance, training, and leadership; so as a result you have no choice but to sink or swim!

The view at 401 is incredible. They hire young and attractive folks, so there is that. Not much in the way of brain power or cognitive maturity or insight. Fun place that you can easily have a drink outside of work with some of your colleagues. Obvious a stepping stone type of location, as they are not stable and probably never will be. Is a training ground for employees fresh out of school. Lot's of ability to excel because of hurricane operation model.

    Cons

Everyone is out for their own self-interest and/or personal agenda and goals. You see infighting, backstabbing, and gossiping at every corner. The thing that happens the least is actually professional level communication and team work. Upper management is ancient and has dated views on how to run a company, and as of now, this place is a yards sale. Strip the talent that you can at wholesale prices!!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take managing classes. Actually, take about 2 or 3 of them.

I worked at Accretive Health full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Flexible schedule, friendly co-workers. I got a paycheck

    Cons

Some managers don't understand the departments they are managing therefore they set goals and expectations that are not possible to met. Quality of work is poor because you have to rush in order to met your goal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is alot of favoritism and nepotism. I worked for Kalamazoo location for over 4 years and I have seen good dedicated employees fired or leave because of the poor management and training. Employee handbook means nothing because it gets changed at the companys discretion. There are too many hands touching each account so there are a lot of errors which is why patients are upset when they call customer service.

I worked at Accretive Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great time off from day one, the junior level employees are all go getters that have great ideas.

    Cons

Be prepared to give up all of your free time if there is a major project going on (and even at times when there isn't). Most employees are expected to drop everything for the smallest issues, and it seems more time is spent putting out fires than actually fixing the root of the problem.

I worked at Accretive Health full-time

    Pros

Get your foot through the door with other companies, learn how hospital revenue cycling works by actually getting involved with the work,

    Cons

Some sites do not have a good client relationship and clients will resent you, hires too many young college recruits to save money, no training is offer whatsoever, management does not focus on the team as a whole, no employee engagement activities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With the new CEO, the company seems to be going down a better path and I have high hopes now. Division heads: Pay attention to your employees!!

I have been working at Accretive Health full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Flexibility, independence, marginal career development programs, ability to shine based on work ethic/intelligence/motivation

    Cons

Non-competitive pay compared to competitors in the industry, stock awards are trash due to stock price.
Results are never good enough for Leadership. Gain-share model means that strong performance is often overlooked.
