I have been working at Ace Hardware part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Family feel, flex hours, meaningful relationships with customers, managers, and coworkers, great place to learn the basics about business, shorter store hours than other places, managers are great to the workers, sometimes we have fun at work.

    Cons

Lowest pay rates in retail, Ace considers clicking through video after video good training, no quality time with ownership and corporate staff, store managers often treated poorly by owners - so no one wants to be a manager, too much time counting inventory - not enough time making sure we have the right product or help customers, our Ace seems to be struggling to keep up with the times, owners sometimes seem more involved in their personal lives than their business!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be stuck in the past, let the people in the store run the store, need to be open longer hours to compete with internet and other retail stores, need modern products.

I worked at Ace Hardware full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Small locally owned neighborhood store. People were allowed to bring in their dogs.

    Cons

understaffed, more work than mere mortals could handle. Store was overstocked, cluttered, impossible to keep clean or even marginally tidy. The manager was a compulsive workaholic which meant he was too busy to bug us. He'd assign a task and then disappear, leaving us to do our work without undue interference. The assistant manager was the opposite, a totally disorganized micromanager and a real pain in the neck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The last time I was in the store, the place had done a complete 180. The store owner had fired the manager, took over his job, cleaned out the overstock, and apparently got the more obnoxious employees under control.
    At this point no advice.

    Pros

Easy to learn the ins and outs of the job. Cash register was easy to run. Nice to help customers with many aspects of home improvement

    Cons

Bad management. Very low pay for new hires. Not the nicest people to work for. No flexibility on taking time off. Scheduling was a nightmare

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Office culture and better clock-in/clock-out system

I have been working at Ace Hardware full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Fair compensation for work provided, company tries to keep a historical culture of being friendly and helpful.

    Cons

The Management level is ridiculous, the managers have no clue what they are doing, almost seem to be promoted after a given timeframe instead of earning a promotion. Executive group has a plan, communication downward does not flow smoothly. The company is run on the fear of the RSCs instead of best for business.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Helpful is a two way street, as you want helpful to flow from Corporate headquarters to the RSCs to eventually the retailers, there has to also be some open communication on what the issues are instead of just trying to cover them up.
