Love working with co-workers, management is another issue completely. Benefits and raises are getting worse every year.

    Pros

Good work environment. Benefits used to be great before buyout. Relaxed work environment. Heavy, but manageable workload.

    Cons

Department had unusually high turn over rate (over 90%) which tells you that employees were not satisfied. Management also had high turnover rate. Management promised things like raises and bonuses and failed to deliver. Lack of communication. Failure to address real issues.

    Advice to Management

Genuinely care for your employees and try to make them happy. Actually respond to emails, and hold meetings that address real issues.

Very low paying for the one of the most important roles in the organization, SDRs drive pipeline.

I worked at Actuate full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice office in San Mateo, good people, no perks (bowling randomly), sales kick off was a good time.

    Cons

Very little possibility to get promoted or work your way up. Even if you Inside Sales is not set up for success.

    Advice to Management

Train the employees better and compensate them for their hard work. Also hire managers that care about their employees and have a plan to get them moving in their careers after the grind of SDR life.

A promise of a bright future, but the reality is a dark miserable micromanagement team in the dark.

I have been working at Actuate full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They have a good mix of products that are in demand right now.

    Cons

They moved the sales organization from a perpetual license model to a subscription model. They do not care the effect of that change as it relates to the commission rates verses the annual number. Their lack of commitment to their clients and their employees is a receipt for disaster.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the customer, in today's world of social media your need to provide a high level of customer focus and commitment to build a strong reputation and repeatable business.

I worked at Actuate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Exposure to many departments and workings of the company. Great pay for an entry level job with no experience required.

    Cons

No official training program so very challenging to learn when no experience was required. The team was extremely backlogged so it was high pressure and high stress. Very specific team and company culture that does't fit everyone. No clear communication between management and team about expectations and tasks.

I worked at Actuate full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Local sales manager was good but sr. managers were concerned with their own survival.

    Cons

High sales turnover, frequent territory changes, average product made it difficult to create real relationships with clients. I knew I was in trouble when a client pulled a stack of biz cards from their drawer and said they were all my predecessors.

    Pros

good work life balance, nice employees, friendly environment, generally accessible exec staff, flexible with family, small enough that most people get to know each other

    Cons

high turnover, no employee retention plans, below average compensation and near impossible to get an increase, few opportunities to grow, have to leave to improve career, party culture spills into work time, some long term dead weight in the ranks, steady loss of talent and nothing happening to stop it

    Advice to Management

    time to try something new

    Pros

The technology is good in a competitive industry.

    Cons

Sales is a revolving door. Poor morale among sales org and customers. Constantly making it hard to do business with. Not capitalizing on open source. Do not care about growth.

    Advice to Management

    Work on growth.

I worked at Actuate as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

7 hour work days, relaxed and slow pace environment like that of a government organization. They embrace alcohol and parties. Their products are good.

    Cons

Highly political, lots of back stabbing and subjective false allegations towards each other. Just dysfunctional especially to a newbie. Lots of comments to new employees such as "you should have known xyz from your last company". Males openly flirt with females and the females don't mind (not sure what falls under - weird?). childish behaviors.

    Advice to Management

Your method of divide and conquer works wells and you are achieving your goals.

  10. Mixed bag -- good accomplishments but some odd behavior

    Pros

The products are good -- you can point to what you made and be proud. Also, there are lots of good people there. The company doesn't try to inflict an artificial culture on its people. If you are sick, they support you being out to get well. They seem to mostly keep the people they hire -- didn't seem to be much turnover.

    Cons

Hard to get requirements or functional specs on product development., even when your job needs access to them -- didn't seem like they exist Embracing agile dev seemed to be just an excuse to fly by the seat of the pants... or maybe they had a plan (including specs & requirements?) and no longer felt like they needed to communicate it to other employees. Increasingly the main innovation was in China, not the U.S., which added to the communication issue. Sometimes odd politics led to surprising promotions or credit being given to the wrong people.

    Advice to Management

Go back to having a communicative development process with requirements and functional specs created and reviewed by other folks in the company -- both to help them get their jobs done and to provide valuable feedback to the development process.

  11. If Actuate can gain traction with their open source offerings, they could be an exciting company

    Pros

The investment that Actuate has made in their new open source offerings is a daring move, and one that might get them the market share they need as a second tier business intelligence software provider. This technology, along with the community of open source developers that back it, have led to some very exciting technological advances that make the products very exciting to work with. Coupling these innovative products with their battle tested server offerings provides a fairly compelling story that mixes the innovation associated with open source with the stability provided by a seasoned and time tested delivery platform.

    Cons

Actuate has changed its strategy numerous times, and I think this has led to confusion throughout the organization. At times, they have focused almost exclusively on marketing several different productized "reporting applications" that primarily targeted the financial sector, which makes up the majority of Actuate's install base of customers. As that sector has suffered, so has Actuate. They have also attempted to integrate several acquisitions with varying levels of success. The Performancesoft acquisition has not been well integrated, as both the technology and the skill set needed to market and sell it are very different from Actuate's traditional core competencies.

    Advice to Management

To avoid becoming an also-ran with an ever-shrinking customer base, Actuate needs to focus on their open source offerings and figure out a better way to monetize the market share they have gained.
