I worked at Addus Healthcare full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I worked in the office, and not as a home care aid. The pay was decent. Benefits were good. Local office had a great group of workers and I enjoyed my coworkers.

    Cons

Upper management was not supportive. No transparency. Corporate payroll and other management was inconsistent. Almost no one in management had any knowledge of certain smaller programs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Transparency. Listen to your Agency Directors and get them the supplies and staff they need.

For Addus FAMILY Services- can be overwhelming at times, and every now and then rewarding

I have been working at Addus Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

A lot of the work can be scheduled flexible*
    Reimbursement for mileage
If you need time off, you can usually always find someone to cover for you
If you have a long trip away, you'll get most of your pay from driving

    Cons

Sometimes due to kids being in school or parents working, visits cannot be changed
Sometimes you can have as much work as you can keep up with, other times, you won't have much
    Dangerous work environment at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would recommend better benefits- the benefits don't give justice for the work Family Service Specialists do. Poor paid vacation time and little to no incentives, other than to try and "fix" your clients that by in large don't care to change their lives, just get by enough to get their children back.

I also think the dangerous aspect of the job needs to be addressed better. They have trainings every year, but I don't think that's enough. Often they put family service specialists - in situations with people who have been to jail or prison, are having their parent rights terminated, or are possibility abusing drugs/alcohol, or suffering from mental disorders. This was always a concern of mine. I was worried a parent would hurt me after one of his last visits with his child, and I was told nothing could be done about it.

    Pros

Treat employees well, Compensation is adequate, Niche program in healthcare market

    Cons

Disorganization in upper management. Great ideas on the future of healthcare but no execution to get these ideas to materialize into a concrete plan.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More time and resources need to be spent on sales and marketing of IHSS services.

I have been working at Addus Healthcare full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Meet a lot of interesting people. Insurance and benefits with full time status.

    Cons

Quite a bit of wear and tear on your vehicle. Low pay with little or no raises. Little recognition for the hard, and sometimes, difficult situations that are encountered. No communication between supervisors and workers in the field.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Local supervisors lack the ability to communicate effectively with clients or staff. Communication makes a business run smoothly and effectively. Clients need to know when their worker is sick and unable to make it to their house. It's the supervisors job to make sure another person is sent out to cover that client. It's also the supervisors job to make sure the staff have the proper information when they go to a client's home. It would be nice to have a schedule and not have to rely on my memory of what my schedule was six months ago. It would also be beneficial for the staff if we didn't have to give our personal number to clients because that's the only way the client can communicate with the company. It would be nice if the supervisors would return client's calls. Especially when it involves getting a new client. I gave out business cards with the local number on it and no one from the office ever called back. You have lost a client. I also don't like to have my clients asking if there is a different agency they can get their services from. It has happened more than once and I feel that it reflects badly on how management doesn't care whether they give good service to their clientele or not.

I worked at Addus Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is resonable, decent vacation/ benefits package

    Cons

The work environment at the corporate level is highly stressful. You are expected to stay late without much notice as though you don't have a life outside the building. They quote that they are a "family oriented" company which is purely a marketing ploy. New ideas for improvement are seldomly welcomed. They are set in their ways with little to no open mind to change. They tend to contain fires rather than extinguish them. Their operations remind me of water. Follow the path of least resistance. If you are a professional and one that believes in doing things the right way I would look else where. This is not a place for a career but rather a job. Something to get you by.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Slow down and stop trying to do everything all at once. Focus on your systems/ technology as they are horrible in comparison to competitors. Once you have your systems and operations locked down focus on your sales so that you can handle the business coming in the door with staff at hand. Currently you have no clue the staff it takes to run the business effectively while maintaining a healthy work environment. It is sad that you are so closed minded and blind. There are many talented and hard working individuals on your payroll that have lost their drive to do better. Any time an idea is brought up on how to improve a process it is shot down. Listen to your employees as they are the ones in the trenches and you all are lost in the clouds and have lost focus. It seems as if many bad decisions have been made and the company is trying to stay a float long enough to squeeze every penny out of it while they can. Your employees are an essential part of your success. Give them the time of day and do what you can to improve the stress level. Give them an incentive to work their hardest and you might be surprised what you get in return. It doesn't take much. Start with respect and acknowledgement and go from there.
