    Objective

Retail Parts Pro Management (Former Employee)
    Savannah, GA

ProsThere are not any good reasons to work for Advance Auto Parts.

ConsThey do not really have any sort of good training program. They do not pay well. They do not treat their employees well. They try to get too much work done without enough staff to handle the work load, and take care of the customers at the same time.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou need to get a real training program. Yes most things can be learned on the job but some things can not and or require dedicated time away from a counter to learn the process. You try to have the employees do too much for the customers outside the store. You clearly state that you install batteries and wipers that are purchased at the store. You are not a service center so don't try to be. Stop telling employees ti install head lights and tail lights and air filters etc... Stick to the what it says on the windows post that you don't do automotive work, tell them it is and insurance reason. If employees are not outside trying to rebuild customers vehicles then they can be inside trying to serve other customers. Never have only 2 employees on duty, especially not at night.

    HORRIBLE.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThere is not one. I have never seen a company not know what to do like this one.

ConsTwo many to list. Treat your employees with some respect. Have District Managers do a job and not baby sit.

Advice to Senior ManagementFigure out which direction you want to go and go fot it. Way too many changes in 5 years.

    A realistic view

    Sales Associate (Current Employee)
    West Palm Beach, FL

ProsGas Money only....That's about all it's good for....

ConsWorst Garbage manufactured from all over the world......batteries (which they push) have a very high defect ratio and constantly being replaced by newer versions of the same garbage,,,,,,Will not carry DELC, EXIDE, etc.
Brake Pads the same....no longevity.....stay away from heir goods.

Advice to Senior ManagementFind another job......employees at the store levels are treated like slaves. (worse than slaves)

    Miserable

    Commercial Parts Pro (Current Employee)
    Beckley, WV

ProsEasy money, feels good to help local garages & contribute to my community.

ConsI'm a driver. Was hired at minimum wage a year ago, had a great boss at the time, he moved on to a CAM job, new manager hires people at 25 cents more per hour than me. I go hard every day, they have promised me full time for months but still part time after 13 months. A lot of favoritism. Moron for a GM. I tried to talk with him "privately", he made my complaint a group discussion before telling me "I'm not a babysitter". I know when I'm being taken advantage of. All of my coworkers feel overworked and underpaid. Also have been promised a LAW position for 10 months. Still hasn't happened. I close commercial every day, delivering non stop all day until 7pm, also am expected to take out trash and clean bathrooms everyday, and put up truck 2 nights a week. New guys are more appreciated than me & haven't broken a sweat since they started. Once a better opportunity presents itself, I will take it. I'm on my way out, there is nothing this company can do to keep me, and trust me, I am one of the best assets in my district. I was told growing up that showing up on time, not calling in & working hard will get you everything you deserve. I was told wrong. This company has broken my spirit like a wild stallion. I only stay because I have to support my family.

    Advice to Senior ManagementNone.

    Disgraceful Place to Work

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Pensacola, FL

ProsChallenging work enviorenment. You get to help people with their vehicle problems

ConsHeavy lifting and odd hours as well as a lack of Teamwork

Advice to Senior ManagementSupervise the treatment of the Team by fellow Team Members! Allow more frequent Employee reviews for advancement and Pay Increases. Also, allow more incentives for Internal Company Growth. Need a better balance of Female to Male employees so the men don't have to do all the heavy lifting.

Worst corporation I have ever worked for!

    Assistant General Manager (Current Employee)

ProsDiscount on parts is sadly the only perk I can think of at all.

ConsEmbarrassingly low pay(less than fast food). When we are hiring and people inquire as to how much we pay, the general response is laughter. I am not sure if this is company wide but we are literally forced to hire people at a lower starting pay than McDonald's, even if the candidate is very qualified with multiple ASE certifications. Our workload has tripled over the last 18 months and our reward has been no raises for the last 2 years. Also our prices have sky rocketed and it's getting out of hand, local grocery stores are killing us on oil by over $1 a quart and our DL tried to say it was because of their buying power, sure Ingle's and Food Lion have more oil buying power than Advance Auto.

Advice to Senior ManagementAt the ridiculous rate you think you can pay people this company will fold within 10 years. People that have no clue about automotive repair can't sell parts, it's that simple. Basic math, if you drop pay by $1 an hour you "Save" $40 a week per employee right? WRONG! Because that person you just hired in at a bargain just lost you 1k in one day by not knowing jack about what they were selling. And that also goes for higher management, DL and up. If you want to "lead" a district of professional auto parts sales people, you might want to figure out what a brake rotor is or what a spark plug does.

    13 wasted years

    General Manager (Former Employee)
    Columbus, GA

ProsIn the beginning, there was the opportunity for advancement from within the company.

ConsInternal promotions are no longer the norm. Just about every management position will be filled with outside hires. If you manage to stay with the company for any length of time, and you are not a General Manager or Mobile Pro, you will have a sales goal based on your compensation. The more you make, the more you are expected to generate in sales regardless of the situation. Your only hope is to become friends with someone in operations to attain any type of promotion. I watched the company that once truly cared for its team members become a company where its no longer what you know but who.

Advice to Senior ManagementYou have become a company where no one wishes to speak up. Bad idea are forced to work regardless of merit. At one time there was a company wide review of operations; how ever, when the team began to point out obvious flaws with where the company was headed you stopped listening and started punishing.

    Staaaay awaaaaaay!!!!

    Cpp (Current Employee)
    Cincinnati, OH

    ProsReally can't think of any!

ConsAdvance DOES NOT take care of it's employees. The GM in my store was fired for saying inappropriate things the women employees HOWEVER the investigation into the incident by the DM was a total joke! SHE (yes people, a woman) made the employees she spoke to feel as though they were at fault for speaking up! She went as far as to avoid talking to certain TM after she had to fire the GM!!! Way to provide a SAFE work experience ADVANCE!!!!!

Advice to Senior ManagementUmmmm let me think.....don't try to cover up your mistakes by making TM feel bad for not wanting to work in an unhealthy, unsafe, and hostile environment!

    Terrible management practices.

    Assistant Store Manager (Current Employee)
    Columbus, OH

ProsThere are no good reasons to work at advance auto parts. The only job this is better than is no job at all.

ConsI have friend who work in fast food who make more money and get better benefits. The hours are terrible for everyone including store management. (General managers are required to work Saturdays and close on Fridays and assistant managers are required to close at least 3 times a week). Completely unrealistic sales goals and very little opportunity for bonuses.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet your store management teams decide how to staff and schedule the store based on the experience they have in that store and stop trying to make a cookie cutter scheduling model that works for all stores because it isn't going to work. Also stop with the stupid focus training, we don't need to be reminded about how to sell car wash every year, especially for those with ASE (like myself) because the focus training is a redundant waste of time for us. Also I can understand having a minimum sales goal, but ignite is terrible and automatic write-ups for those who can't make their sales goals is just intimidation that creates a hostile work environment where cut-throat sales tactics and stealing sales from other employees are more important than helping your customers.
