Global family moving in the right direction

    Affymetrix Sales (Current Employee)

ProsAs a sales rep the hands off management style let's me work like I have my own business. I make my own schedule, target accounts and hit my number. I sell products that are changing how medical decisions are made-directly improving the life of patients. That's job satisfaction. It's not all about the money.
Affy is a small global company competing with much larger companies. As such, I interact with people all over the world on a daily basis. Even though we have hundred of employees, the CEO, VP, Software Engineers, Product Managers, Sales Reps, and Support staff know me and I know them. We really are like a giant family. Some cousins you hate, but most everyone you love.

ConsOver the past couple of years, the management team has been tasked with righting a listing ship and getting it back up and powering through the waters. This meant they had to streamline and focus on what is most important. This meant letting go of some talented people, but also some fat. Those of us left are doing more with less, but doing it much better.

Advice to Senior ManagementRemember the goal to keep moving forward and keeping it lean. More upper management is NOT the answer. Put resources into R&D.

Making moves in the right direction

    Bioinformatics Engineer III (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsThere are many good people to work with at Affymetrix. I have seen very little in fighting/politics. This makes it a very pleasant place to work.

ConsIt can be difficult to move up in the company. Lots of good talent isn't retained and has left because of lack of career growth.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe sure to grow your younger talent in the company.

Hinders personal and professional growth - USB

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsHealth benefits are free for those that are single. Good vacation time as well.

ConsManagement is the definition of unprofessional and underqualified. Lack understanding that our generation doesn't just take hand outs, we want to work for promotions and have a sense of accomplishment. Transparent management, high turnover rate, little resources for training, zero follow through on commission and bonus payouts.

A great history - a future in question

    Science (Current Employee)

ProsBenefits are extremely good for a company of its size.
Technology has historically been cutting edge and interesting
    Flexible working hours
Independence and hands-off supervision by line managers

ConsEmergence of competitive technologies put downward pressure on stock
Advancement from junior to senior science positions is difficult or impossible

Advice to Senior ManagementRecent changes to course of product development - focusing on doing fewer things, but doing them better - was a positive and welcome change. Please be very careful about selecting instrumentation vendors for manufacturing branded equipment; we suffer for their bad decisions or poor workmanship

A great place to work with great people however company is struggling to gain market share

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Santa Clara, CA

ProsPeople, benefits, flexiblity, managers, exciting work, lunch program, work from home option

ConsStock price, lack of market share growth, pay could be a little better, too many opinions from mid-upper management can slow processes,

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on inovation rather than continue to market struggling products. Make sure products come to market after comprehensive quality control.
