    Pros

-cafeteria & breakrooms- is it a bonus to not eat a single meal at home? Maybe you work to much.
    -a few, kind veterans colleagues...

    Cons

-entrench "cave-dwelling" fire-breathing dragons, oh my!
-if you never change your core technology you never have to learn, grow or accept new ideas or people(s).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

VP with Sr. directors must together take charge to work for change. This change is to better compete with existing & different market and make your new products successful from release. The cost-cutting strategy has been obtuse & harsh on the loyal, long-term temp "recycled" employees.

    Pros

Great technology. Do something good for the world. Many of the people are fun and driven individuals. Company has potential for turning around. Diagnostic market is exciting and could bring long term prosperity.

    Cons

Poor management decision making. Infighting between departments. Politicized atmosphere. Promotions more a matter of who you know, not what you bring to the table.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Weed out middle managers who are hurting the company. Put more emphasis on product development, marketing, and manufacturing operations. Subcontracting/outsourcing manufacturing does not work for low volume, high complexity, and regulated environments. Stop promoting finance specialists to lead operations.

    Pros

Opportunities for personal development inside and outside the company.
    Good compensation packages.
    Very smart employees.
Company slowly begining to adopt to better practices.
    Nice place to work,

    Cons

In some departments, loyalty to the department overrides corporate vision.
Loyalty to one department may cause difficulty in working with other departments.
Lack of sharing of knowledge between departments.
    Not a cooperative team environment.
Poor infrastruture with low priority given to rebuilding a better infrastruture.
Little support or resources for non-product projects, such as rebuilding the infrastruture.
Technical and business sides of the company do not align.
Many middle and upper management people still using the same methodology as 10 years ago to run the company, which is not working to help the company now.
Multiple rounds of downsizing beginning in 2007 with smart, hard-working, necessary people being let go while non-helpful, outdated methodolgy, difficult people remain.
Company resist to change to better technologies.
No upward flow of communication to middle and upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep good employees and let go of bad employees. Make sure the corperate vision is adhered to at all levels of the company. Encourage and listen to upward flow of communication.

    Pros

They have interesting technology, good benefits and nice campus. I expecially like science seminar feel like still in college..

    Cons

There is too many levels of management for the senior mangements to see who are doing the real work. Senior managements are surrounded by lazy middle level managers who are just talking and take advantage of quiet, hard working people's work. Hard working employees won't get any recognition because manager took it all.
Affy used to say they will have technical track and managerial track. unfortunately, technical people got so little recognition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior managements should talk to RA, engineers, developers but not just managers.
Lay off VPs, directors and managers. never see a company has so many VPs.

    Pros

Work environment with colleagues in same business group is great. Salary, benefits and professional /personal life balance is very comparable to the life science space in Silicon Valley.

    Cons

The company over 4 years has changed senior management 2 or 3 times trying to get the company on track with no resolve. Affymetrix has too many Senior VP's trying to get some cash and catching the revolving door to next company down the street. No accountability in the organization as a whole with little direction on where we are going. Will we be here in 5 years????

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior Leadership that can foster smart competitive business decisions to create profitability. To many Senior VP buddies that do not get anything accountable accomplished driving products that our completely not ready for market or don’t have a market. Talent pool is dwindling!

    Pros

Affy treats its employees well - the benefits are really great - after a short time its easy to accumulate a month of vacation while still taking a few long weekends every year. The pay is pretty good too.

    Cons

Communication and coordination in the company has been start and stop the past few years. We have a pattern of major decisions being made where the long term benefit to the company has not materialized. The pattern of choice is top down decision and poor sharing of responsibilities. The company is full of smart people and every one of the knows whats best, usually making for poor coordination and products which are not breaking the company out of its rut. Hope springs eternal, but I would say that the technology is not really to blame, but rather poor communication between pretty poor management in various sections of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make groups accountable for their mistakes - lay off managers and directors - some of the decision making processes are selfish and random. Do 360s on everyone and try to find out who is motivating and coordinating effort and who is both making everyone they work with unhappy and delivering poor product.
