    Pros

Being able to work in Sonoma County is a pleasure, as it is a lovely area in which to live. Technical abilities of coworkers and project engineers is outstanding

    Cons

Layoff culture Mismanagement of product lines and growth Mismanagement of time to market Problems with non-technical managers managing technical groups

    Advice to Management

Please show some back bone and spin EMG off, and stop dragging it around and not adequately funding product development. For technical positions, you cannot just manage by people principles. You have to understand what they do, and not just the concept. Management is more than just a Powerpoint slide presentation.

    Pros

always fresh technology to learn with.

    Cons

offshoring efforts didn't take into account the effect on the people that made the company what it is.

    Advice to Management

appreciate the loyalty of the employees when you think about layoffs. People suffer, and you keep getting your bonuses.

    Pros

Lots of smart people to work with.

    Cons

Work-life balance issues really depend on how your immediate manager or their manager views the topic, for example, can you work from home or are you expected to be in the office. You can be held responsible to be in the office during the day but on calls early in the morning and late at night, again, depends on the work group. Pay is supposed to be among the best, but check it out because the pay is inclusive of a bonus that only is paid out if the company is doing well. You could find a better salary elsewhere. If you are hired in at a high wage, it may be years before you get an increase.

    Advice to Management

Spread the wealth to the folks who are doing the work. The pay system gives little reward to the folks who are supporting the few who are deemed exceptional in a statistically biased measure.

    Pros

Up until I was laid off, it was the the best job of my 40 year career. The technology is great and they are doing very interesting things. Most of the rank and file engineers are very smart and great to work with.

    Cons

The company was just split into the medical ("Life Sciences') and electronics ("Electronics Measurement Group"). The Life Sciences company will keep the Agilent name and who knows what the Electronics Company will be called. I was a master level level electronics engineer who's contributions were in almost all of the microwave and RF products. The "HP" way is so dead and gone.

    Advice to Management

Way too much corporate BS. Only thing that you care about is the ROIC to line your own pockets. There are some very evil and incompetent mangers who don't have the skills to work in a high technology company.

    Pros

Good place for entry level straight out of college hires. Otherwise, nothing positive.

    Cons

Age Discrimination: If you are over 50 you are at great risk, they will force you to retire if they can. Otherwise they micromanage until they can fire you. If you are over 50 you are held to entirely different standard. Ruthless abuse of power: Peers in Germany were tricked into crossing the board to a new base office in Switzerland. This made their employment exempt from German law; within 12 months the entire SITE lost their jobs to Singapore. Management will lie and falsify records: Personal is under staffed and afraid to take a stand. Management will change commitments after they are set and claim you missed them. They’ll use absurd logic and outright lie to move anyone out of the way that is a threat to their advancement. No local accountability: A manager in the USA might report to someone in Singapore, so the American can be a dictator and tyrant while sucking up to his boss. You would think his boss would meet with the employees and spend at least a few minutes to learn what was going on. Not even three minutes of time in five years, a total disgrace to the founding HP Way. Morally and ethically corrupt the oppression is unbelievable.

    Advice to Management

Middle managers take credit the results and upper management has no clue to the truth. You need to look at the trends of how you are forcing old employees out before you slammed in a major class action law suit. Extremely disappointed with the CEO who was on board during the Hewlett Packard days, if he still believes in those values he need to sick out and remove the bullies in middle management.

    Pros

Great mission. Decent pay. Good people to work with.

    Cons

Constant drive for low cost IT services....to the point that all they do is outsource. Half the price for 1/4th the quality. Very disappointing.

    Advice to Management

Make IT accountable to the business and give them the budget to actually add value.

    Pros

Good benefits. Great employees. Good opportunities. Excellent market and business.

    Cons

The employees are treated poorly. The work environment is hostile. The management for the Lake Forest and Folsom site looks down on employees. They are not open to any new ideas or suggestions. It is a very closed environment. Employees are afraid of sharing their ideas because of possible harsh consequences.

    Advice to Management

Consider employees as the great asset of the company as they should be.
