Proud company with amazing employees held back by management infighting & lack of investment in operational excellence.

I worked at Agilent Technologies full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Rich heritage. Employees are greatest asset who go to incredible lengths, working countless hours with very little reward or recognition. Engineering talent is outstanding and folks in trenches are highly creative.

    Cons

Need to focus on the customer with greater intensity, Circular door of management with the same leaders simply changing seats which causes repeat mistakes and entrenched beliefs. IT investment is constrained for internal operations.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more risk and act with company values instead of pretending to. Need to take more leaps and make greater investments in Marketing setting achievable goals and tolerating less in-fighting and management of personalities.

I have been working at Agilent Technologies as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Extremely flexible schedule, as I could shift my hours to whatever worked best for me.
Wonderful people, most of which have lots to offer in terms of learning.
    Laid back atmosphere.

    Cons

The pay is slightly lower than desired, and the health benefits were only "okay".
No paid sick leave as an intern, but that is pretty standard.

    Pros

using linux in development, good compensation, clear high-level goals from management. Customers, upper management, and engineers seem to understand one another.

    Cons

unclear / disorganized processes for doing things, have to risk upsetting people to get anything done. middle-level management seems out of touch with both engineers and customers.

I have been working at Agilent Technologies full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Love the people I work with and what the companies does. Agilent also has that rare feeling that the company actually cares about its people.

    Cons

IT is cash strapped and heavily outsourced, it is a battle to get resources if you are not driving a sexy technology like Telepresence or mobility. Focus is often too narrow and on cost instead of long-term gains and risk taking.

They also believe in manager rotation, so the managers are not skilled in the technology they are managing. This is often a problem especially in complex areas like security, and it shifts a lot of power and responsibility onto the "architects" who are constantly retraining their managers every 3 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Agilent employees are a resource and their internal knowledge is not easily replaced need to find a way to raise up more internal local US resources that can provided the direction and leadership to the outsourced groups, HR needs to learn how to match salary to the roles they key players play.

Relaxed environment and reasonably stable job

Current Employee - Engineer in Santa Rosa, CA
Current Employee - Engineer in Santa Rosa, CA

I have been working at Agilent Technologies full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This is an established company to work for. With much of the HP culture that was inherited, employees are trusted and held accountable. Work-life balance is highly respected.
Management is honest and friendly (as much as one can expect from management).
    Job stress is usually little.

    Cons

Lacks in diversity: In Santa Rosa it is predominantly white and male, especially in engineering roles. The population has been aging for a while (if you are under 50 you are considered young!). New hires are coming in at a slow pace. On the plus side, the aging population carries a vast amount of knowledge and experience.
    promotion is slow.
