ProsSuper smart people, right in the middle of making the internet work.

ConsIt can be a bit chaotic at times.

Advice to Senior ManagementI'm deeply impressed with upper management at Akamai. I've worked (as a consultant) in quite a few companies before coming here full time, and think they do a spectacular job in terms of ethics, social responsibility, transparency, strategy and general execution.

Innovation returned after several years of status quo

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsAkamai is in a better position than ever to tackle some very interesting and challenging problems in the next few years. There is a renewed sense of innovation in the Engineering organization and hiring has significantly increased and improved in quality recently compared to several years ago.

ConsAkamai has yet to get to an enterprise level of business & technical process which is relatively unusual for a company of this age. This goes both ways but is mostly negative. It certainly makes ramp up time for new employees longer than typical and can be an unnecessary drag on existing employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in on-boarding new employees, particularly in the engineering disciplines. More technical and management training for all.

My fast paced career at Akamai has given me insight into the cutting edge technology that makes the Internet work.

Graphic Designer (Current Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsGreat compensation and benefits. There are new, fun projects every day, and no two days are the same. It is extremely satisfying to work on projects that reach millions of people every day.

ConsThere is so much work to be done that it's hard to fit it all into normal business hours.

Akamai is a great place to work

Systems Software Engineer (Current Employee) San Mateo, CA

ProsThis review pertains to my experience in engineering working with folks in Cambridge, MA and San Mateo, CA.

Akamai is a great place to work for engineers who are passionate about distributed systems and network security.

    1. Work along side some of the best minds you will ever work with in your career. Beyond all benefits and perks, this is the single best reason to be at Akamai.

    2. Terrific opportunity to grow and make an impact at all levels.

    3. The original DNA of the company that was set by the founders from MIT is alive and well. There is a culture of innovation.

    4. Use the latest technologies (including open source) - skills picked up here are applicable across the industry. This is important as you don't want to be an expert on proprietary stuff no one outside cares about.

    5. Managers are very technical and do a great job of managing a skilled set of engineers.

    6. IT department doesn't come in the way. Just walk in and pick up whatever equipment you need and get on with your job.

    7. Unlimited vacation policy.

ConsThere will always be things to complain about. No company is perfect.

One of the best companies I have ever worked in

Senior Systems Engineer (Former Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsIntellectually challenging work in a very collaborative environment. Lots of non-trivial problems to be solved, and many opportunities to provide ideas for solving them. Due to its unique business and technology, the learning curve is very steep, but everybody I met was happy to help you learn.

If you want to work and think hard, and you want feel that you are contributing to a great team, then Akamai is one of the best places to be!

ConsIn 2+ years of working at Akamai I could not find even one "con"!

Advice to Senior ManagementStay the course.

Cambridge headquarter is great place to work!

Senior Engineer (Current Employee) Cambridge, MA

ProsInteracts effectively with various levels of the organization. Treats others’ opinions with respect. Management offers assistance proactively and shares information that helps others do their job well. Probes to understand and confirms understanding of what is heard. Often encourages employee to innovate.

ConsHires too many project manager to create lots of process that often gets in the way of innovation.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe unmanageable, non-productive and remote employees, who are 'resting and vesting' without adding value to the team will end up discouraging the truly talented and hard working employees.
