    Pros

The atmosphere is collegial. The compensation is consistently at the top of the market. The management is extremely competent and focused on long-term stability.

    Cons

As with all firms, the hours are long and unpredictable. Work-life balance is a constant struggle.

A firm full of talented attorneys with little hope for advancement to partnership.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

The firm is full of talented associates, counsel, senior counsel and partners, many of whom are also great colleagues.

    Cons

Advancement within practice groups is entirely contingent on the good faith of the partners with whom you work. The firm lacks a system for measuring performance independent of the specific reviews given by partner and more senior ranked attorney supervisors. As a result, stellar work can sometimes be lost, unrecorded, and unrecognized, especially when conflicts develop between rising stars and established partners.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop a system of 360 evaluation that will enable subordinates to report out on the management skills and other abilities of more senior attorneys. Develop a method for recording work origination that accurately captures when non-partners originate matters.

I have been working at Akin Gump full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Relaxed work environment with good management. Great benefits and excellent training tools for any necessary jobs/tasks. Nice people to work with.

    Cons

Rigid work schedule (not very flexible on hours). High stress environment. Nothing really else to say. Yes, you have to be able to meet deadlines and what-not, but heh, that's called having a JOB!!!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This is not a place to work if you're planning on staying more than 3 years to repay student loans.

I have been working at Akin Gump full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The salary is probably the best thing about the firm.

    Cons

Everything else; it's biglaw, and is probably no worse than any biglaw firm. But overall it is not a positive environment in which to grow as an attorney.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

Great benefits and as far as law firms go, this is one of the better ones.

    Cons

There are no advocates for non-attorney's and non-managers. Speaking with HR about an issue you're having with a direct supervisor or manager only puts you on the radar so, most people (those who want to keep their jobs) will keep quiet about issues with their boss, no matter how serious it may be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sadly, any advice would fall on deaf ears, but if they really wanted to change, they'd pay more attention to what's going on with their non-legal staff.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

Competitive firm and salary without the cut-throat lifestyle. The work-life balance is not ideal, but is better than one would expect from similarly situated firms.

    Cons

Firm needs more open communication with associates.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

Good work environment, good bonuses, flexibility in determining your own schedule. There are lots of opportunities to do pro bono work and all pro bono hours count just like billable hours.

    Cons

Work can come at any time, twenty four hours a day, seven days per week. Chances of making partner are small, and there is little transparency on partnership admissions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The more communication with the associates, the better. The new focus on evaluations is good, but they need to make sure that the evaluators use the same standards.

I have been working at Akin Gump

    Pros

Work/Life Balance. Always willing to give me my earned time off for my child.

    Cons

The recent turnover of a lot of partners. We haven't quite recovered. There seems to be so many empty offices and we will really need to fill them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We know the economy is in turmoil and layoffs are inevitable, but what is the real criteria? Performance reviews, longevity, etc. I personally think that the summer associate program needs to be really trimmed back. Way too much money is spent on this program. I know we have to compete with other firms, but in this economy I think it is possible to cut the program.
