    I have been working at Alaska Airlines full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    The flight benefits was the best part of the job. It was nice to go visit family every month.

    Cons

    Flying standby is not what it's cracked up to be. I like to call it "the lottery"... I still get stressed out whenever I'm at the airport from years of anxiety! For the position, the salary was horrible. The don't feel like I had a good work/life balance while working there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    You're employees are playing too many hats and working far too much. Salaries need to be re-evaluated to match competitors.

    Pros

    Good flight benefits. Some nice people in many customer faced departments. The company is really customer friendly, but what really counts (safety) is lacking.

    Cons

    Middle /Upper Management are stupid and have no credibility with their employees or the FAA. Have many fines and investigations for non-conformance. Safety and reporting problems is smoothed over with a huge turnover in the department with replacement by unskilled engineers. The VP of maintenance is expecting a major accident and is critical of engineering for good reason.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I would clean house in engineering managers ( and many lame engineers) and believe the maintenance management/mechanics are very good. Keep up the smily face in the rest of the company.

    Pros

    Most employees are very nice.

    Cons

    It's very hard to move around in the company because there's so much favoritism. It's emphasized internal candidates will be treated differently, but their application process filters out internal candidates. So it's very hard to move forward without knowing the right people.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Upper management needs to start recognizing current employees. The lack of attention has been causing many current employees to start looking for advancement elsewhere.

    Pros

    Personal time off, flexible schedule, occasional telecommuting

    Cons

    IT systems are old and in constant need of repair. Very limited investment in improving behind-the-scenes operations. As far as project management goes, the budgets are undefined because labor isn't planned or tracked well. Schedules are never met because resources are spread too thin and personnel don't feel compelled to meet a schedule. Scopes are constantly in flux.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Focus! Implement and enforce use of a labor planning/time keeping tool that is easy to use. Make people accountable.

    Decent benefits, including flights (when not full)

    Cons

    Middle management is squeezed to perform more and more with less while upper management enjoys secretive "perks" and front line (union) are paid well through contracted wages and benefits.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Work toward increased transparency, honesty, and internal succession planning. Train, mentor, and promote from the inside to gain trust and loyalty. Performance Based Pay (formerly profit sharing) should be the same percentage of wages or salary company-wide and not higher for upper management.

    Pros

    If you want to live and fly in Anchorage or Seattle and don't mind working for a company whose management team only wants to take care of themselves then this is the place for you.

    Cons

    Management continually fails to recognize the expertise available in day to day operations by current employees and makes decisions based on "focus groups" comprised of mid level managers who are out of touch with operations.
    What little positive corporate culture and team spirit is left is rapidly decaying under management's remote and deaf leadership.
    Constant reminders by leadership that they don't trust your judgement or ability to help lead the operation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Start taking care of your people. I don't think it is too late to recover from the damage you have caused to this once great company. Go ride on SWA and see how their culture is. That culture and spirit is cultivated from above by a management team who actually cares about employees and the future of the company.
    Use the expertise available from your employees in shaping the future of the company and day to day operations. We see what goes on every day and can help to fix things. Let us take some ownership of this company.
    If things continue the way they are going the company is going to decay into another labor problem filled legacy carrier like NWA and when we reach that level there will be no turning around.
