I have been working at Alberta Health Services part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Decent pay, vacation and good benefits. Room for exploring other opportunities within AHS.

    Cons

When you have a complaint or issue Management does very little to help you resolve it and can lead to unnecessary stress at the workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be proactive and support staff by providing the proper tools to rectify ongoing issues in the workplace. This will help and prevent less sick time and provide a more stable and efficient workplace. Will also boost morale and provide a positive environment.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

There are some amazing people there and highly dedicated doctors and other medical professionals

    Cons

Management of staff is done poorly. It is not AHS primary focus so the management is mostly untrained or training is by AHS. Union limits more than it protects. Your experience will depend on the quality of your manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't grind the good people who work hard into the dirt and favor the individuals that fly under the radar and do nothing, sometimes literally.

A well-funded organization with weak management and short-sighted vision in non-clinical areas

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary, benefits, job opportunities, great work-life balance.

    Cons

There is a very uneven distribution of management skill sets in non-clinical departments. In some departments, managers are very skillful and commited, and work extremely hard. In others, key management and executive positions are filled in with people lacking skills, knowledge or experience. Expensive, long-term projects can be undertaken without a long term strategy or clear vision resulting in huge loss of money. Subtle but persistent bullying is common. A proliferation of 'directors' who don't appear to manage or direct anyone yet command huge salaries. Overall, there is lack of strategic planning and leadership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a clear strategy and hire people into executive/management/directing positions that fit the job requirements rather than based on internal recommendations or credentials alone. Take bullying complaints seriously.

Former Employee - Senior Financial Analyst in Grande Prairie, AB (Canada)

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salaries are respectable, benefits are pretty good. Large organization allows for many position opportunities and personal growth for them.

    Cons

Staff is unable to maintain work life balance as the workloads are extremely heavy. Staff gets frustrated and result is they leave and others must pick up their work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek workload balance at the lower levels. Look below manager level where people are paid the least and expected to work at unrealistic paces.
