I have been working at Alberta Health Services part-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Lots of extra shifts to pick up, lots of benefits, good team work, many postions to choose from to expand your career.

    Cons

Can be very intense working in that environment, working short staffed, some shift schedules not ideal for young families with very young kids.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Stable and secure jobs at front line level. Pay is good for public sector career. Benefits are good. My immediate co-workers are very competent and genuinely care about doing the best in their job.

    Cons

Not all leaders in my department are honest to the workers. I've witnessed two-faced actions on more than one occasion from certain individuals. Communication between levels is extremely poor.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not try to be deceptive with workers. Professional staff can easily detect dishonesty and that destroys trust which is very difficult to recover. Just communicate issues as they are without sugar-coating or thinking workforce needs manipulating.

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stability, working for a societal value. Lots to learn and good professional advancement opportunities.

    Cons

Office political skills more relevant than professional skills. It is a huge organization where survival in the role has selected out true change seekers. No understanding of employee role as an organization stakeholder.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change comes from a change in people values. Accept new values and become more professional in your governance efforts.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Wonderful people often here because they truly want to give back to their fellow human beings. A place where you really can and do make a difference.

    Cons

Size of the organization has resulted in too many leadership levels with the politics that often comes with that. Equally union closed shop is bad for freedom of choice.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reduce the depth of the leadership structure.
Explicitly target leaders who demonstrate a directive and hierarchical style where it's not appropriate.
Start walking the talk on organizational values at ALL levels of leadership.
Start taking the tough decisions and removing employees who are being carried by their teams.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Secure jobs, good wages, benefits, vacation, union

    Cons

Convoluted management hierarchy, terrible office politics, limited OT / work hour flexibility, it's about WHO you know - not WHAT you know

I have been working at Alberta Health Services

    Pros

Most people truly care about doing an outstanding job

    Cons

At the whim of the optics of the politics of the day. That is, frequent structural and leadership changes originating from within and without.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should run AHS more like a business; counter the power and philosophy of the internal special interest groups. The government should stop using healthcare as a scapegoat and/or canvas for their political agenda.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

It's big so there are opportunities to move about depending on how dynamic you want your career to be. The pay is reasonable and can be competitive. If you are engaged and take on more responsibility; there is opportunity. If you want to float and do as little as possible, unfortunately, that can happen too.

    Cons

Employees have an unreasonable sense of entitlement and the unions are really causing the downfall of the healthcare system. They have gone beyond protecting the worker to harming the financial stability of the employer. Sick time, bereavement leave, breaks, WBC claims, disability claims are all being abused. Everyone complains but no one does anything about it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Privatize the most costly facets of the organization and negotiate more reasonable collective agreements.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Great work benefits like vacation (4 weeks to start), good all around management - everyone up to director level are quite accessible, even executive treats basic IT people with respect and friendliness (most of the time).

    Cons

Upper management from other AHS departments has a tendency to put IT last. Many of them are so focused on the clinical side that they forget about our needs and that if our needs are not met then we cannot support the clinical side.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Non-IT upper management; please start considering IT's needs to be just as important as everyone else's. Without the IT systems your clinical staff are unable to work properly. Please show us some more respect.

IT management; Start sticking up for us against the rest of AHS. Without us their hospitals fall apart.

All AHS management; it is simply wrong that you would accept bonus's while freezing our wages. It is also immoral to lie to us about it. These actions create a culture of distrust.
