Great people, encumbered by excessive bureaucratic culture

Senior Advisor (Current Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsWonderful people often here because they truly want to give back to their fellow human beings. A place where you really can and do make a difference.

ConsSize of the organization has resulted in too many leadership levels with the politics that often comes with that. Equally union closed shop is bad for freedom of choice.

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce the depth of the leadership structure.
Explicitly target leaders who demonstrate a directive and hierarchical style where it's not appropriate.
Start walking the talk on organizational values at ALL levels of leadership.
Start taking the tough decisions and removing employees who are being carried by their teams.

ProsSecure jobs, good wages, benefits, vacation, union

ConsConvoluted management hierarchy, terrible office politics, limited OT / work hour flexibility, it's about WHO you know - not WHAT you know

Overall it's a good place to work if you find the right people

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMost people truly care about doing an outstanding job

ConsAt the whim of the optics of the politics of the day. That is, frequent structural and leadership changes originating from within and without.

Advice to Senior ManagementShould run AHS more like a business; counter the power and philosophy of the internal special interest groups. The government should stop using healthcare as a scapegoat and/or canvas for their political agenda.

You get out of it; what you put into it

Supervisor (Current Employee) Edmonton, AB (Canada)

ProsIt's big so there are opportunities to move about depending on how dynamic you want your career to be. The pay is reasonable and can be competitive. If you are engaged and take on more responsibility; there is opportunity. If you want to float and do as little as possible, unfortunately, that can happen too.

ConsEmployees have an unreasonable sense of entitlement and the unions are really causing the downfall of the healthcare system. They have gone beyond protecting the worker to harming the financial stability of the employer. Sick time, bereavement leave, breaks, WBC claims, disability claims are all being abused. Everyone complains but no one does anything about it.

Advice to Senior ManagementPrivatize the most costly facets of the organization and negotiate more reasonable collective agreements.

The experience has been good. (Note: I am in IT) 3.5/5 stars. It was 4.5 until a few months ago.

    IT Service Management (Current Employee)

ProsGreat work benefits like vacation (4 weeks to start), good all around management - everyone up to director level are quite accessible, even executive treats basic IT people with respect and friendliness (most of the time).

ConsUpper management from other AHS departments has a tendency to put IT last. Many of them are so focused on the clinical side that they forget about our needs and that if our needs are not met then we cannot support the clinical side.

Advice to Senior ManagementNon-IT upper management; please start considering IT's needs to be just as important as everyone else's. Without the IT systems your clinical staff are unable to work properly. Please show us some more respect.

IT management; Start sticking up for us against the rest of AHS. Without us their hospitals fall apart.

All AHS management; it is simply wrong that you would accept bonus's while freezing our wages. It is also immoral to lie to us about it. These actions create a culture of distrust.

Health Research Student Co-Op Alberta Health Services.

Summer Research Assistant (Former Employee) Calgary, AB (Canada)

ProsThere is much room for growth into higher positions since Alberta health services is expanding especially with the opening of a new hospital in the Calgary area so they are very keen on internal hiring. Also, depending on the position you can qualify for various benefits such as; gas millage, health insurance and moving expenses right away.

ConsAlberta health services is a province wide government health care provider therefore the hiring process is quite lengthy and it will take approximately a month to 8 weeks before all your employee training and on-boarding details are complete. Although, Alberta health services has an online hiring process most positions are filled using the internal hiring process or through referral
so be sure to make contacts within Alberta Health Services before applying (especially for student positions). With regards to Summer Student Research opportunities funding for this has been cut in the recent years so very few positions are available through out the year.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe management for student research positions is okay. I cant say much about other areas of Alberta Health Services.
